Door locks

I used to have an 83 Z and when I locked the driver's door the passenger door locked too. I recently bought an 82 and the pass. door does not lock with the driver's door. Is this normal or is something not working? Thanks.

Base model

Do you have power locks ? probably not, the GLL package had electric door locks, power mirrors , power windows, which most base models don't have. You can figure out what options your car came with by decoding the Vin, post it and if you like Ill do it 4 u. Al those power options added a lot of weight too. Looking under the drivers seat out of my 86T, it has at least 3 motors, and all kinds of gears and crap, it weighs a ton. So performance wise, the base model is lighter !

If you do have the power options, then you have a bad wire, switch or fuse.

Gll

I do have power mirrors and windows, rear wiper and front headlight washers (missing washer reservoir however). Here is the vin: JN 1CZ 06S 7CX 6 00685
If the p/s door lock should work, should I remove the door panel and check for power at the lock? If there is power, then would the lock motor be bad? Or should I start with the d/s door lock to make sure there is power going to/from it? Thanks PredatorZ.

Check the connections

You could just have a corroded connection in that door, pull the door panel and check out all the connections, clean them if needed, I would check the connection at both door lock switches also.

Pull out ye ol' multimeter and check the wiring. I'd start with the door lock relay.

There is a model designation number, not the Vin, should start with HL or KH that will have a break down of your options, post that number and Ill figure it out. The tag on my 81 was next to the battery on the firewall

issues I still need to address....float in washer reservoir, no back up lights, and no power doorlocks. Spent a couple hours scraping rust and applying POR-15 today. I put the car on jack stands and it looks like I might have some brake fluid leaking in the rear.

Yes it is a 2+2. Thanks for the info. So I should have power locks, correct? The wife of owner number 4 wanted black trim parts which is why the door arm rest is black, as is the visors and steering wheel. I've already put back the red steering wheel. Anybody need black trim parts?

Are the louvers rare? Not made anymore? Are they different for 2+2 than for coup?

Yup

you have the GLL all power dohickeys, so now it is just a matter of tracing the issue down, its a switch, corroded connection or a bad relay ! The fsm shows all the locations of the relays, shouldn't be too hard to find. But if you run into a snag and can't find it , Ill track it down, I have every fsm that's available for Z's with countless hours studying them, so I know the Nissan manual format and where to look, usually ! I learn so much just doing research for others, and I am on holiday, burning off my vacation pay and wrenching on my zx as much as possible.

Apparently not many people opted for the 2+2 louvers and as far as I know its a hard to find item now, so you are very lucky, the rarest trim option is the carrera trim bar, not sure on the name, but it takes the chrome piece on the side window and carries it over the roof, ill post a picture of an example. better pics of the bar lower in the post, I did ask him for better shots to document them.

I don't remember now where I did buy the the rear louvers for my 2 + 2. But I do remember I wanted them to keep the sun off the back storage area...And I kind of like their looks!!!!!!!

I can't remember...you know C.R.S......but I think where ever it was, they also had the side louvers, but I thought at the time, that's a little too much.

I would think a competent restoration shop could fab up a stainless steel piece if they had a good picture with dimensions.

its possible

For one, that ebay ad groups all the louvers into a single group, as if 2+2 and coupes were the same, and still, what I was talking about was a Nissan part, anything other than that is just chinese crap ! You can bolt on or have made almost any part(if price is no option), short of the rubber door seals, which seems impossible for someone to reproduce, But it's not the stock piece, which has a look all it's own. I wouldn't trust a part that shows a picture of a mustang to sell a part for a Nissan. If they were really serious, they would show the louvers on our cars ! There is a niche group of companies trying to make good quality replacement parts, when shopping I try and use these people, so I support them supporting us !

Roof piece

If we could find someone to reproduce the stainless roof piece, I would buy one. Would rather have an original, which are available used. I would almost be willing to buy one from ZSource, send it to a fabricator and allow them to make an exact copy.

Nissan 280ZX Targa Strip, Datsun 280ZX Targa Strip, 1979-83 - Z Car Source

289$ bones to have the honor. I had my eye on a fairly nice zx that had the roof trim, but it sold.

Well, getting back to the door locks. From the fsm I checked the door lock timer and it tested fine. I also checked voltage at the plug going to the timer and I think I have low voltage there when I lock/unlock the driver's door. Then I pulled the door panel off to look at the electrical solenoid. It is mounted inside the door. It looked like removing it was beyond my capabilities so I just left it alone. Fortunately I can easily lean over and lock/unlock the passenger door.
