280ZX (NA) to 280ZX Turbo swap
Nice hood Bleach! It's like the Japanese General Lee. I just hope you don't start entering and exiting the car through the t-top openings.
Movin' right along on the motor swap. That's awesome, keep it up and you'll be done in no time.
Rod.

Right on Bleach that is a sweet hood. Quite different than usual Z's. And yeah it looks like your moving right along with your swap. And I have faith in you, that it will get done in a short time. Keep us up man, sure makes me wish to do my Turbo swap. Maybe after I pick up the '83, and get it running. Who knows?
All aside welcome back Dorifto, long time no talk to. How you been bro'?

The engine is out, replaced the steering rack, new tie rod ends and mounting bushings. The steering boots were the wrong size... again. Check the boots when you buy them. They're always giving me too small of an opening on them to go over the rack.
I'm working on laying down the FI wiring right now. There is one extra white wire going out the back of the fusable links box that the NA wiring does'nt have anything to plug it into... so ya, I'll look into that and see what to do with it. Everything else is going smoothly.

Of course having the turbo wiring would've been easier
I have that whole turbo coil wiring section. I cut it way back at the dash... so if all I need to do is splice in part of that to the NA wiring... let me know or post a link. I know of a few instruction websites on this setup but I have to search for them.
not exactly. You'll need to run a wire (the positive wire) to the ECU wiring. There is a connector provided for this under the dash though. Its one of the connectors that comes off of the main ECU harness. Unfortunately I dont have any diagrams or manuals handy right now to help you out with which space on this connector you'll need. All my stuff is packed and ready for the move
The ground wire is run the same as the NA though.

^ You need more coffee.
Yeah, I've been kicking around a bit. Gotta check up with mah boys in the Z world. A lot's happened in my time away from you Zedophiles. That's for another thread though, I don't want to bastardize Bleach's thread any more than necessary.

So I decided to paint the engine bay while it is out so I'm working on that today. The new engine should probably be going in tomorrow evening.
Here are some pics from Saturday
lower milage steering rack cleaned up, with new bushings and new inner and outter tie rod ends

engine bay cleaned up a bit

ya, just the bay area

NA wiring harness by the fusable link box

turbo harness tapped in. Three main power wires out of the links box are the same. The one clip on the left with the crimp connectors is the only part that was different. I matched the colored wires to the NA setup and that leaves on white wire goning from the FI harness to nowhere. I'll look into what that wire is for. If its a signal for the boost gauge then I don't need it as I'm not running the factory boost gauge.

Still painting...

235,400 miles on the NA motor and still running strong. It had stock compression of 8.8:1 at 200,000 which is the last time I checked compression.
The engine bay didn't get a whole lot masked off. I did a quick cleaning of the bay and then I just held the wiring harness out a bit with one hand and sprayed some paint around behind it. I did the engine bay one section at a time this way. I only masked around the top edge. It took about 6 hours of work but it looks really good now.
The white does not look quite that bright in person. the flash made it glare a bit

had some trouble with the flywheel bolts and the clutch but its all together now...
the car is ready for the engine

engine in (crappy camera always blurrs, I even took two pics)

the engine is not quite bolted to the transmission all the way

this one stupid pin that sticks out will not go in! I got the upper two tranny bolts in loose.I then set a jack under the tranny so the engine is hanging on the transmission. I got in the engien compartment and lifted the entire engine up and twised it over and over but the stupid thing will not go in!!!
I'm going to go to dinner and see some fireworks...
this is how I feel -
I realize this is a little late coming but... it's a whole lot easier to put the engine/tranny into the car already bolted together. It just slides right in that way. Then just loosely attach the tranny mount so you have leverage then bolt up the engine mounts.
Enjoy the fireworks.

I've pulled a few engine/tranny combos. Without a tilt on the engine hoist, it sucks. It is a lot less work to just pull the engine then to remove the center console, shifter, tranny mounts, driveshaft, and drain the tranny fluid. I had no need to remove the transmission.
I'll get it to snap together tomorrow.
