Good lord you're turbos were gone! How many miles were on them? Are you having the machine shop do any cool things for you? While they're out, you should price check how much it would cost for a port/polish/3 angle valve job. Maybe some ferrera valaves would be nice. Good luck on the build!

Rizz-
I'll take lots more pictures as it goes back together so then you'll feel like you're here.

Those turbos had 150k plus on them, so I got my mileage out of them, literally.

I'm not doing a full rebuild. What you see is likely as far as I'm going into it.

I had asked Robert at Z1 quite a few questions and he responded today. He says that the 525 turbo's are awesome and should last as long as the stockers as long as you take care them (proper oil changes). Incredibly quick spool-up and an amazing 'throw you back in the seat' feel. He recommened I hone the exhaust manifold myself and save a few hundred bucks. Also recommended I put it back together with ARP head and main bolts with a cometic headgasket. The stage 2 head creates approx 15-18 more HP over stage 1. Stage 3 is a 25-30 HP increase over stage 1. I'm undecided. He estimated 425-430 HPat the wheels on pump gas (15-16 psi)

I got the name of the machine shop that the Nissan dealership outsources all of this kind of work to. Nissan said the guy is great and they've been using him for over 10 years. I'll check him out.

Every summer it seems i get a huge influx of work. So seeing your car torn apart just gives me the urge to put it back together. lol

If you're going with MHG's, then make sure the BLOCK as well as the heads are PERFECTLY flat! check the roughness grade needed for the MHG as well. ARP's are awesome! I love em! How do the cylinder walls look? Minimal scoring?

The local shop is doing the valve job for $350. Dad felt that the guy knew what he talking about. He called him and discussed the job with him. 3-angle grind, test all springs, valves and guides, mill the head(as little as possible), pressure test, etc. This stuff is new to me.

I'm not having the head ported. The cost outweighs the benefit.

Z1 sells a set of upgraded valve springs for $250. You guys see any benefit to running upgraded valve springs with a stock cam?

somehow I doubt it. from what I've heard if you don;t have something to back up your stiffer springs (ex: bigger valves upraded cams, and cam gears, gides, ext...) not only do they not help but can make you loose a couple horses. btu that's jsut "what I've heard"

2nd. If you're going to do upgraded springs, do the whole thing. But that's not too useful until your far far down the upgrade path.

porting and polishing heads is simple and can be done yourself. the only con is it can be time consuming. check out these articles on porting:

Something to think about...

The machinist said I need 4 exhaust valves and of course all 24 oil seals, but that's it, so that's kinda cool. I ordered the 525 turbos, ARP head bolts and Cometic head gasket. I forgot to order the Noltec motro mounts, so I have to add that. With all of the gaskets, EGR valve and other random stuff I need to put it all back together, there goes another $3k. I'll get $500 of it back in core returns though. I won't be able to keep my paperweights. Z1 needs them back.

Thanks for the info on porting the heads.

No, just the head bolts, turbos, MHG and a rebuilt power steering hose. I ordered the OEM stuff from Courtesy and there were a few things Z1 doesn't carry. I picked up the 300 degree master cylinder brace from Specialty Z and the NISMO pilot roller bearing from SGP. I also ordered a set of urethane lower control arm bushings from COZ.

When you do your MHGs, make sure that your block is flat and smooth to spec as well as the head.

Have you seen people have problems with the MHG's? Robert @ Z1 hadn't heard of any problmes and they use MHG's all the time.

b-where'd you get your roller bearing from?

My friend had aproblem with the NISMO MHG's he bought. they didnt allow the head to seat flush according to our Nissan certified mechanic. both before and after the heads were resurfaced. (his heads overheated and warped)

That's more than likely, becuase the block surface wasn't flat.
