yes you need it, it's like a little circle plate, theres one inside your distrib. just not the right one after the swap.

So it's the rotor in the distrib?

like a circle plate inside, if you take apart yours look under neath the plate, it's there. make sure you just take it from a junk yard, cause i paid 40$ for it, and it would of taken a minute to jonk it. Just remember which side is up.

for connecting all the Z31 connectors (at the ECU) to the 280 harness do you use crimp connections or solder everything?
same on the AFM....

where's your diagram on this?

I soldered everthing. About 6 AFM to MAF connections, 4 or 5 ecu connections, 1 fuel pump relay connection, ground the fuel pump.

Other than that, just pop in the chopper wheel, MAF, and ecu.

EDIT... I have a zip file of wiring diagrams at home. I will post that tonight.

Wahoo! Did you remove all your a/c lines? You took all that stuff out from your dash, but I never looked @ the a/c system.
