It's okay guys, I am glad I decided to take the time, and drill the holes. They really look killer on my Z. And they are more flush than when they were on my T-top. Now I need to do other things to improve my Z's look. But first, I need to get a new radiator.

 

Well after getting tired of putting fluid in every few days. I have decided to take my power steering off. I know for a fact the pump is bad. Just like my other Z's. It is a redundant vicious circle. Anyway, It will make it easier when I need to get to certain things in the engine bay. Besides, I really don't want to spend the money on a new one.

 

just replace the seals, you can still buy pump gaskets from the dealer as far as I know. the only specialty tool that I know of for that pump is snap ring pliers.

 

dumb question, do you have rack and pinion or recirculating ball?

 

Rack and Pinion. Recirculating ball steering was from '79-'81. Starting in '82, they changed to rack and pinion. And it is not a dumb question.

 

Oh really? I didn't know you could replace those. Do you think Courtesty parts would have them? Also how many are there to replace, and how much do you think they will cost?

Well I took the power steering belt off the other day. And noticed a difference. It is a little harder to steer, but I will get used to it again. I don't have the money right now to fix the pump. Still jobless, and scraping by. I took a turn with one hand the other night though. So I should be fine for now. heh heh

 

After I read that post I tried to drive my Z w/o power steering. idk if its cuz I have a 2+2 and the recirculating ball system or what but its HEAVY lol

 

You got to have the power to steer it. lol All aside, yeah probably your style is more difficult to manuever than my rack and pinion. Actually I did have to manually steer my '81 before. (which has recirculating ball steering) When my pulley bearing literally broke off. I do remember, it didn't take too long before I replaced the bearing. lol

 

do the power steering cars have different ratios to the non power steering? like the ratios in a transmission, say the non power steering would be in first gear, making it easier to turn but not as far, and power steering would be like second gear, its hard to turn alone, but with the pump it's easy, and you get power and distance. so if you took away the pump its harder.
someone should do a test, take a non power steering and power steering z car of the same year or similar, rotate the wheels, count the revolutions from end to end and see if the non power steering takes more revolutions then the power steering one.

 

Must be something different with a factory non power. My 79zxr turns like my 83 did. I only tell a difference when sitting still and turning. Everything else is the same to me.

Yep, if the power part fails the hardest to turn would be the recirculating ball power steering. But when it work right its also the quickest lol

 

lol also i bet there's gotta be some resistance from the power steering system itself not moving

 

Okay, I have a question about my dash lights. I am going for a purple display. But unfortunately, it is not quite bright enough with purple covers in the original bulbs. Is there a way, I can put brighter bulbs, that will give me the color I need? I want to make my entire interior lighting purple, including the dome light. I am mostly there, it is the dome light and dash lights I would like to improve. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

 

paint the bulbs, or get those colorful paper things that are clear, I think art stores have them, there probably clearer then the bulb covers, but you probably want to get them a good distance away from the bulbs, because I think they burn easy.

 

Get some super bright red or blue LED lights and put red or blue gel covers over those. That might be bright enough!
