As for taking the needle off. The best thing to use are needle nose pliers. But be careful, the plastic gets brittle, and could break on you. Of course if that happens, there is always good old super glue. lol Good luck man.

there is a special tool called a gage hand puller which is constructed just for such operations. do a google search. you might also find it under watch repair hand pullers. saw one for under two bucks. McMaster Carr might have them. they used to be common but no repairs gages anymore.

I tried that, and failed man. Trust me it wont work. I thought it would be cool, to have a 6 digit odometer in my 130 gauge. But the size of the gears and numbers are different. I tried different combinations, to no avail. But hey, if you happen to figure it out. And find something I missed. Let me know.

^'79 was the only year with the 130 speedometer, and the 5 digit odometer in the 280zx. Starting in 1980, because of some stupid federal law. The speedometer's were made to say 85mph, and started with the 6 digit odometers. Hence changing the innards, so that nothing would change or swap over. Of course that was in the U.S. models. Not sure how they did it in other countries.
