As i get older my memory fades. I can't remember if in 1983 if the 280zx was still using the 2 key system, one for the ignition and 1 for the locks or the 1 key system, can someone jog my memory?

 

The one for my ignition doesnt work in the doors but its pretty worn.

 

Definitely 2 keys. One for ignition and one for locks.

 

I miss the one-key system of my 81...but yeah, sounds like you have the 2-key if it works in your ignition but no where else :P

 

Nope - one key for door, ignition and gas cap.

 

look at the cylinder for the rear hatch you should find the key number stamped thereon. Get one cut at nissan dealer or competent locksmith (ie not home depot). also possible someone changed out the ignitionswitch. is there a phony looking paper tag in the glovebox with something like x1234 written on it if so that is the original key code.

 

hey guys..so i bought a 1990 399zx yesterday and i almost snapped the key off in the door. i've been to 2 lock smiths and they both tried cutting me a key twice but they did not work. i even went to the nissan dealer and they cannot get the code to cut me a new key..what too do??

Did you consider that the lock tumblers may have been changed so the code won't be valid.
