yeah that carpet insulation, its crap, take it all off. a hand grinder with a wire brissle attatchment was how i did it. but you will probably want to replace it with some newer style foam insulation

I ripped as much of it out with my hands as i could. most of it came off in big peices, leaving just "hairy" spot where the adhesive still held to the bottom of it.

haha, I'll praise aircraft stipper all day long for woking great, but don't get that **** on you. The can says "Do not use in a windy area" for a reason.
I sprayed it on a scrap fender outside, and the wind blew it back on my fore arms and in my face. That crap reacts IMMEDIATELY! I had to make a blind dash back to the barracks, tripped over the sidewalk and then basically took a shower in the public restrooms sink. That crap burns. I look like i just hit puberty again. red speckles all over my face. it sucks. so for safety purposes, READ THE DIRECTIONS!!

well, what started out as just a way to test paint strippers/stripping methods has turned into something else. I got that scrap fend completely stripped of paint now. During the testing of paint strippers, i got inspired and stripped the whole thing. then i saw all the dents and dings where the fender had been hit. so i went and jacked some ball-pein hammers and a hand anvil and went to work. now it is a respectable looking fender. where the other vehicle had hit you can still feel some bumps, but other than that, it looks good.......Then it rained. Bare metal + Rain = cancer!

Edit: Justin had already done most of the major dent removal work. but there was some bondo work under the paint, hiding low spots. All i did was bend the metal back into shape, straiten out the edges, and smooth out the harsher stuff that the paint hid.

people make out body filler to be bad stuff, but it's really not. use plenty! most of it gets sanded off anyway! a show car may still be respectable if the body work was done using filler.

Body filler is good & useful, but you are supposed to get the metal as straight as possible. My auto collision repair instructor was very adamant about getting a panel straight w/o body filler. He'd slam a hole in a fender w/ a pick hammer & make us fix it w/ no filler.

yea, i always will try to get it as close as possible, but i'll always save time if i can use filler... up to 1/4 inch thick, filler is very effective. and iff it's more then that... there is that fiber glass re inforced stuff!!!!
i'm just saying that i won't take an hour with a hammer and dolley to get a panel flat when i can hammer it once and then finish with 10 minutes of filler work

What color are you going to paint Lady when you finish? Oh, and if you ever get tired of looking at those 70's style uphostered seats, I have a set of real leather all power seats from a 80's 944 that I would let go for a reasonalbe price. You would have to make a custom seat rail of course, or modify the existing one.

Sorry about being an *** earlier, I was having a rough week.

Its all good man. I was comin off as a whiner anyway. And i know all about rough weeks. So all is forgiven.

I might have to pass on those 944 seats. i'm pinchin pennies to get the body work fixed right now. Lady has no interior right now. with the exception of dash and driver seat. but just to indulge my curiosity, you got any pics of those seats?

Todays progress, cut the rough edges outta the passenger floor holes. gettin some new sheet metal soon to weld back in there. might even use the sheet that was already there. and i took a hammer and scrapper and chipped and scraped that tar type undercoating offa the trans tunnel. I'll hit up the floor boards next.

well, attacked those floor pans today. only got most of the driver side done. Its a time consuming process. stay hunched over all the time with chisle and hammer. But it looks so good without all that coating on it. Its so worth it. The floor pans are harder than the trans tunnel. Dunno why. i guess its just the drain grooves, and having to work around the steering wheel and pedals. but thats all for today. I'm bushed and sun burned. So i'ma go find a shady spot and have a brew or two. Its a beautiful day outside.

P.S. Is there anything that will take that tar residue off? Just the stuff thats left after you chisle the main coating off. Or is it just going to have to be sanded?

why would you go threw the trouble of that slow method and not just take an electric hand grinder with a thick wire brissle brush end over it all. lol.

I actually tried that first, but all it did was smear it around after it got warm. and what it did pick up off of the trans tunnel, it would fling all over the cab.
Long story short, that method was actually taking too long and was making too much of a mess. so i just reverted to the chisle and hammer. knock it off in large flakes and sweep them out thru the hole in the floor.

what wheel were you using on it? the thick wire brush? there are tons of attatchments that could work better. maybe the 40 grit on a large grinder

This is like the wire wheel i used. The major removal is almost complete now. I got bored with the shade and brew so i went back out and finished the driverside and about half of the passenger side. I'm just wonderin how to get the left over residue or whatever off so that i can paint it. I guess i could try some light scuff pads. Or just take it back down to the metal. since i'm gonna paint over it, i guess it wouldn't make much difference.

well, took the stripped and repaired fender and put it back on the car. Shot the underside with rubberized coating to protect that side from rust, then shot the outside with some primer coat and semi-gloss black. mmmmm....its such a nice color. I think i'm going to do the whole car in that color. Maybe put a high-gloss candy-apple stipe offset down the center of the car too. You can see the left over dings alot better with paint on it. the swirls from the circular grinder don't hide them. But it still looks sweet. I need a friggin camera so i can show you guyz.

well, caught a guy with a 240sx that wanted my stock rims, so we traded. He got my 14" stocks, i got his 15" chrome 5 spoke American racing mags, with tires (90% tread). In other news, passenger fender, winshielf wiper shroud thingy (don't judge me, just correct me), and both of the inspection hatches on the sides of the hood have been stripped down to the metal. Prepping and painting tomorrow. Sunday i'm going to see a fella with a welding machine and other miscelaneous tools and i'm going to weld some new sheet metal into the passenger floor pan.

After all afore mentioned items are complete, i'll start on the doors. And i got a guy with a camera, so i'll get you guys some pics soon. just gotta get me and him to quit running in opposite directions long enough to snap some pics.

Those arent the stock wheels. They are from a 280zx.

Since the wheels you got were off a 240sx, they probably have a +30mm or so offset which looks like poo on the s30 imo. Need pics to be for sure though.

The winshield wiper shroud thingy is called a cowl.
