well, progress has stopped. waiting on parts. So to pass the time i took an old belt buckle i had (skull and X bones) and ran it thru the shops drill press, ground off all the tabs, threaded the holes and bolted it on where the hood emblem goes. no hood modification required. just used the existing holes. worked great. pic to follow.

Did a little rust work. Used a wire wheel to knock off any loose rust and any bubbling paint. Then used a cut-off wheel to take out any areas that were already rusted through or too thin to be remotely workable. With the exception of the rusted spot next to the gas cap. Had no desire to turn my car into a molotov on wheels.

The worst rust was on the driver side. Just gonna replace that little panel below and to the rear of the door with a new one. As for the stuff around the fender wells....I'd have to cut the lip off if i ever get flares, so i'm going to let it be for now. The passenger side what almost entirely surface rust. Left the metal a bit pitted, but it all buffed off when i hit it with the wire wheel. The spot by the gas cap is the only deep cancer on the passenger side of the car. When i finished hitting the various spot around the car with the brush and/or cutter, i hit it with some rustoleum. just to keep it covered till its fixed and painted.

And Heres Skully. My new emblem place holder.

kinda rule of thumb to replace studs you dont know the integrity of. and also to never ever over tighten. got a torque wrench? if not get one and a FSM or similare

FSM?? (ten character limit)

EDIT: I know us military types use a crap ton of Acronymes, but we usually have to have an expanded explanation first. Do you mean Factory Service Manual??

If there is part of the stud still above the surface of the head, MIG / TIG a bolt onto it & back it out.

If it broke down inside the head, buy a carbide spade drill bit, drill a hole in the middle of the stud, and use a 4 sided tapered bolt extractor (DO NOT USE THE HELIX KIND).

Thanks. I'm ordering those tools right now. Anyone happen to have a part # for the correct stud kit or an acceptable replacement? All i can seem to find are allen head studs that look nothing like the manifold studs in my head (The one in the car, not on my shoulders)

Allen head studs you speak of are the head bolts...

These are the manifold studs: http://www.thezstore.com/page/TZS/PROD/PEC05/15-8080

Just so i don't end up buying the wrong tool, these are the type of extractors you mean when you say four-sided tapered type right?

got the header and the exhaust pipe put on today.
Oh...she sounds so good now. My Lady whispers in my ear now instead of screaming in my face. Pulled her outta the shop and drove her back to the dorms and when i parked there was smoke coming from under the hood. I thought i had ****ed something up, but it was just the headers cooking the paint that was on them. So i took that as my hint to go heat the engine up a little on the road. Wow.....i mean, you can't say that just a header and pipes make THAT much of a difference in performance, but it sure makes the ride that much more enjoyable. I finally got the hear my radio over my engine.

Cool man, glad to hear about your Z sounding better. I have headers on my '82 n/a. And he sounds pretty sweet. Of course I had to have him towed home tonight. Because all my electrical just went dead. And I was stuck at the bar. Friggin' crazy, if you ask me. Anyway I will crash here soon. And tackle him with a recharged brain. lol

minor things fixed. Running lights work again and installed a horn button and wired it up. a cheap doorbell button from lowes makes a good, inconspicuous horn button and is illuminated, so its easy to find at night. Thats all.

yeah, i know O.K. doesn't do inpections on it, but i still like to have a "GET OUTTA THE WAY!" button. I almost had someone merge into me once when i didn't have any pipes. I was like "how the hell did you not hear me when i was right beside you?!" It was a ditzy chick on a cell phone driving a mustang.
