Repairing Lady. (74 260z)
alright. 1974 260z alternator came with an external voltage regulator. I don't wanna mess with that thing so i'm gonna upgrade to an alternator with an internal voltage regulator. I'm pretty sure this has been done before. If there are any complications to it that yall know of, feel free to throw them my way so that i've got a heads up. Thanks again guys.
the 260Z is the most complicated to convert into internal regulated, me and my dad got it done but it was hard as *****, some wierd over ride kill switch put in them we had to bypass it all and install a diode otherwise the car wouldnt turn off. but you re-wired your whole car right? so it might be easier.
yup. got all the ignition wired, charged the battery and turned the key, she turns over just fine but won't start. checked my coil and i wasnt gettin any spark. racked my brain tryin to figure out what the hell was wrong. came up to my room and hit the manuals. I forgot to hook the negative side of the coil up to the Dizzy.
And now its raining outside, so i can't fix it till the morning. I feel like such a meathead.

I was offered a complete LS1 with 70k miles for only 1k. Complete engine, tranny, ecu, harness, etc. I declined, not so much for "purity" but because I don't have the funds to do it. Sure I could buy the mounts for 400ish dollars shipped, but theres more to that. Theres so many hassles like reinforcing the frame, getting better axles, making sure the drivtrain all meets up, upgrading brakes, getting a better suspension due to the car being balanced incorrectly, new fuel lines, etc.
It's not that I can't do the swap, it's just that the money piles up. I have 5 friends right now that I know of off the top of my head who would be at my house in an instance to pull the L28 and drop in an LS1, but to me it just isn't worth the hassle.

the selling point for me on the buick v8 is that its so light, and its actually about the length of a v6. I'll do a lil diggin on my own, but gotta get some of my irons out of the fire before i throw another one in.
just thought i'd run it by yall first to see what yall think. further (constructive or corrective) criticism is always welcome.

Well, got the dashboard in [unfortunately the guages are not wired yet]and the headlights, tail lights, park lights, and blinkers are wired. Untested as yet though due to an irate high ranking military official calling my z a "Piece of **** mazda" and waving a tow truck at me. So it has been moved elsewhere and quickly peiced back together to "Mildly Acceptable condition". Hopefully by Noon today i will have jerry rigged a fuel tank and installed the new Correct Distributor so as to have it in "Running Condition" So i can continue to park it on base and work on it.
The stipulations for being able to work on a car on a military installation are quite confounding. I always just assumed there were worse things i could be doing with my free time. Like hanging upside down from the third floor balcony while chugging redbull and vodka thru a beer bong.
Meh, they do these confusing things to keep us on our toes i guess.

alright. She cranks, she runs, she drives. Lights work, blinkers work, brake lights work. all electrical works. all that remains is to fix my guages, install the cell and get the speedometer calibrated. Then she will be street legal again. even if the work never stops.
nice. once you get all the new wiring worked out as long as you made all the connections really well its time to make her go fast. new wires are the shiz i dont know if i have the patience for that....
Awesome man....glad you got things going good. Anyway yeah you will have to break out the wrench once in a while. But we as Z owner's are proud...and love that feeling of knowing. That we keep our cars running..
they do, but the Hobby Shop (garage) is only open from 11am to 630pm. and i don't get off of work until 4:30pm. so even if i run like hell strait from work and get changed and get to the garage, then i've only got maybe 1.5hrs to do anything with. and that just enough time for me to get wound up good. i can burn up 12-14 hrs workin on Lady easy. But then again, alot of that time is learning what i'm doing while i'm doing it. --->only one year deep into cars, still learning stuff<---

Thursday i'll have to attack the wiring again.
no free time before then.
one gallon gas tank the the tach is the only instrument that funtions, but shes alive!!
