DO NOT use RTV on your L6 oil pick up tube. The only, only places you should be using a skim coat of RTV is around the water passage on the front cover gasket and the gaskets for the thermostat housing. But for the love of god never never put it on anything thats carrying oil

jeep transfer cases are sealed with RTV, ever work on a subaru? lots of RTV in the older engines.

gotta use the black stuff, its meant for oil areas, if you using regular blue or red your going to have problems

ya some motors its fine, but thats why I said L6 specifically.

yes, much much experience building L motors, built 4 L motors, one 4G63. and no never removed the oil pickup tube so never tried sourcing a gasket for one. As for the RTV on the oil pan for the return line on turbo for the talon, i asked for a gasket from AMS performance, you know, the shop considered the best for all your DSM needs with the worlds fastest and quickest EVO8. they are the ones that suggested the RTV, along with the manufacturer. though i find it funny that they are supposed to stock and sell the gaskets for the oil return line. maybe i just got a retard that only knows behind the counter stuff.

oh skib, how you presumed so much about me over one simple suggestion. i did say it wouldnt be my first choice though, RTV that is.

There is no gasket...Was there one when you took it apart? Think of what a gasket is going to do in a pool of oil after 100,000 miles. 200,000 miles (if it lasts that long). hahaha....

oil return lines on turbos almost always have gaskets.

There was a gasket there but I can't find a replacement

No...I'm pretty sure there wasn't a gasket...wait a minute...did you buy a gasket kit yet? There's a gasket that looks like it would fit that I had left over...****...oh well I'm sure it won't hurt not having a pickup gasket, I torqued it down even so no weird particles are going to seep past. WEll, yes there actually is a gasket that I didn't see in the FSM. Oh well......

Their both machined pretty flat so you might get a few small air bubbles in your oil possibly lol or not idk lol

****...i wonder what those small air bubbles could do...Mine were both flat as an asian teen so I think i'll be safe until I decide to maybe paint my oil pan sometime...Probably during the summer I might change my oil pan and check my connecting rod torque maybe check my caps too...

SOOOOOO, i went through all 6 of my datsun books, and not a single one mentioned a gasket for the pickup tube, EXCEPT!!!!! one mentioned removal of the old gasket, and never said anything beyond that (bastards) and the other finally got to the goods, it said at one point for reassembly "sealers are a GREAT product to use but in the proper areas and proper amounts for any excess can break off and destroy the oil pump". then through all of that, the ONLY ONLY ONLY part it said to NEVER USE A SEALER HERE was the oil pickup lol. so i do apologize, i should have consulted my books earlier. and yes it said to install a new gasket, so there IS a gasket.

and tim, it can cause you to have a slight loss in oil pressure, but it should be pretty minute changes.

at one time I found some L18 complete engine gasket kits (really cheap brand) on clearance online for something ridiculous like $8 each. I bought a couple and they came with the oil pickup gasket as well as a couple other front cover gaskets you only get with complete engine gasket sets.
It worked well along with an oil pan and head gasket for the straight six. The 4-banger is otherwise the same engine.
