I bought my buddy's 89 single turbo z a while back, the only downside was that it didn't have a transmission in it. I paid 400 bucks for the car, which seemed like a sweet deal. The motor ran great before he took the transmission out. He took the transmission to work to fix it and apparently somebody thought it was scrap so they threw it away. So now i got a hold of the car and it has no transmission, and i have no clue what's up with these little cars.
I was planning on fixing the car up, finding a tranny for it so i could give the car to my girlfriend but wouldn't know where to start. I always search craigslist and fleabay for transmissions but they're usually mad money. Where could i get some good reading in about these cars and they're transmissions and potential swaps. I hate my first post to be about tranny swaps but the search button never seems to work good for me. The manual swap seems like it could be really complicated and pricey to have done right. But anybody's input about this would be AWESOME, thanks in advance!

Go with the manual tranny, better power response and more fun to drive,even for a chick. I have a spare one but I plan to use it if mine ever went out. Also use the tran out of a na **** on t5 trannys.

Ya i was trying to stray away from a manual, i'd like to go that way more, but it seems like it would cost alot and i'd have to teach her how to drive stick ha ha. But thanks for all the great responses, i've been reading up on the swap since i bought the car, more or less since my friend bought the car too cause it always had tranny issues. I hate to swear but i'm a jeep guy, these nissans are all foreign to me.

Welcome to ZDriver and to Z ownership! Yes, they are different than Jeeps, but mechanically... it's still a car.

For your own sake, I suggest just throwing in another auto. You might have to get it shipped, but there's tons listed on www.car-parts.com :

I'm not shy to rebuild an automatic so i'd probably chose the cheapets one they had then tear it apart and rebuild it. One question that i hate asking though is, are there any differences between transmissions for 87-89. I thought i read somewhere that there's differences for the earlier and later z31s like driveshaft length and flywheel tooth count. If i'm buying an auto, i'd like/ prefer a direct bolt on. I never even thought about carpart.com so thanks for reminding me of that!

ah...its just an idea, but if your not looking for power n such, automatic is still fun to drive and less stress on your feet while in town just keep using the search buttons and bam youll get one cheap. good luck!~

There's no difference in the automatic transmissions from 1984 to 1989. All automatic Z31s used the 4N71B transmission.

The torque converters are different between the turbo and non turbo versions.

It's great if you can rebuild it yourself because they are expensive to have rebuilt at a shop. I paid $1625 for a rebuild a few years ago
