Studder off Idle?

Studder off Idle?
Howdy!
Been working on an 83 ZX for a fellow. It has a studder - just off idle. Will spraying the AFM take care of this?
More history - it hasn't ran for at least a year. I found the distributor advance had stuck together - so once I got the inner distributor working freed up - I disconnected the vacuum hose and gray coil connector and set the timing to 8 degrees BTDC. So I think the timiming is correct.
The air filter was filthy! After changing it out the motor picked up 2-300 rpms! Have clean air filter in it now.
Any advice what to look for would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance!

Usually when my car is sputtering I reach in the back and grab my trusty aerosol can of moose **** and spray that in there. Cleans my injectors, valves, and even feeds the small children that my engine runs on, so they get a little bit bigger before their demise <.<
I'm going to say WD-40, if he thinks the AFM is getting stuck, loosen up those sticky hinges

Uh, Geeze Guys!
I ha ve heard that if you spray down the inner area of the AFM with carburator cleaner it will loosen up and cause the AFM to work "freely".
Any experience with this?

you sure they weren't talking about a maf. two different animals. spraying into the afm only hits a flap that moves when air goes thru it. this is translated to an electric signal by a potentiometer. cleaning that can help but use caution easy to mess up. do a search on that there are writeups on diddling the afm. clean connectors to the ecu, tps and afm. Deoxit by CAIG is recommended. is it an n/a or a turbo there are differences. check the fuel pressure. did you time it with a light or a guess. is the battery in good shape. battery cables tight and no corrosion. zx don't like low voltage spent a month chasing gremlins on my 83 because I had a new battery and I KNEW that couldn't be the problem. at least until I finally in desperation had it load tested only to find it was marginal. all my problems went away.

A lot of the time, it's just dirty electrical connections. Go through the entire engine bay and look for those white connectors and clean them all up. If you still have a problem, I'm sure we can figure it out.
