Thumbs up Passed Smog Today!!!!

Yup, My car decided it wanted to live another two years today and actually passed smog on the first attempt.

For the first time since I have owned it, there were no signs that it's running too rich. Yay!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

I guess all those shiney new parts and bloody knuckles were good for something.

Yeah, I swapped out the two defective new injectors over the weekend.

Had to be my AFM more than anything. With the new one in there, it burns right where it's supposed to. Of course, there were all the other new parts too like the CHTS and Air Reg and all that other crap, but a lot of those were new on the last test and it didn't burn nearly this good. AFM was the main culprit I'm sure.

It still idles a pretty rough, but me and the smog tech agree that it's most likely because of the exhaust. I have the 2.5 tubing and custom collector with an oversized 3 way cat and a very noisy muffler that now has about 40K on it... In other words... No back pressure.

Make sense to you L-dub? I'm curious as to your thoughts on that.

It's certainly a possibility. When you say it idles pretty rough, is it surging or just a random stutter?

Random stutter...

No surging at all. However, it does seem like I can never really "Set" the idle. It changes +/- 150 RPM's depending on how long the car has been running. Throttle body may be a little sticky though.

Dont all Z's stutter? I dont think ive come across an S130 that has had an original motor that didnt stutter despite the fact they ran like a champ.

Yeah, but I know of plenty that idle smoother than mine does.

It's almost the same stutter you would have if you had a high duration cam... It lopes more than stutters I guess... Like an SBC with a big cam.

Thank goodness for our Floridian policy makers that don't give a damn about our environment...we don't have to pass any emission tests.

Surging is usually the symptom for a too low back pressure. But a loping could be considered a surge too so your exhaust is still a possibility in my opinion.

What kind of coil and ignition wires are you using? When's the last time you gapped your plugs?

Most idle issues I've dealt with have been from ignition/spark problems.

After all the stuff you replaced trying to get it smogged, i can't think of anything else that you haven't already checked!

Brand new NGK wires nd Plugs and a brand new MSD Coil. All of which were installed on Saturday... made ZERO difference

I'm sticking with the back pressure theory...

Hey Rod, sorry for the late props. But great job bro', I had faith in you. And considering you passed Cali smog, which is harder than AZ smog. That means your Z, runs leaner than mine. Well I will figure out why mine is. I think I need to clean the o2 sensor, and check the timing again.

Anyway glad to hear it all worked out for you.

Thanks WildmaN,

Now all I have to do is pull all the glass, remove the interior, have all the dents removed, the whole car repainted (again) and re-do the interior before late April and I'm all set!!!

I'm now a big believer in replacing the AFM. It was the one thing that made the most difference.

Cleaning and adjusting your old one only does so much... I did all that and got some results but never enough to really bring it back to what it was supposed to be.

If you're still running too rich, I would seriously think about replacing that bad dog.

the AFM might have been the problem on my NA engine. It passed at cruise and got me great gas milage but ran too rich at idle. oh well, that engine is long gone.

Now if only my Pulsar will pass. I'll be working on that car on Thursday and take it in again Fri or Saturday.

Rod that sounds like what mine is doing. If you can figure it out then great i might have to do what you did. If its backpressure then i'm at aloss until I get my headers installed.
