aftermarket ignition

I have a 79zx for SCCA racing. The guy who built my motor tried to use a MSD system but could not get it to run so he used the stock ignition. I am getting 200hp and 200 torque on a bench dyno.
We have to use the stock AFM but ECU and all else is free. So question, is there power to be had using an aftermarket system, and what is a good brand that works?

If you can use ANY ecu & spark, go with MegaSquirt (MSnS). That will be the best bang for your buck, and it's completely tunable.

As for the MSD ignition... do you know what box (model) he was using? The commonly used one is the 6A or 6A-L. I'm using the Mallory 6A-L & love it.

i dont think he could use msns because he has to use the afm. does ms have that provision? if youre using msd, you need the tach adapter. thats prolly why he couldnt get it to work. the stock fuel system and ecu really starts to run out at 200hp or so, ive heard that there are dyno proven results that on the same engine you can gain up to 40hp by going to carbs!!! if youre stuck on using the stock efi, boost the fuel pressure up and install larger injectors, that should compensate. play with timing will def net some more hp.

Can you use an MAP in addition to the AFM and just ignore the AFM signal with MSII? (I hear MSIII is coming out soon.... already been in Beta for a while now...)
