81 tranny

I'd fill out a huge page to explain. But how other than pulling the fill plug on the tranny would I go about putting gear oil in a 81 non turbo manual trans?

Ok I tried taking the pug out it won't budge. Breaker bar, pipe extention for more leverage, pb blaster, also saw some swear by putting it in at the top after taking out shift rob but it just fills it up and doesn't drain into trans.also I know there is a port on the opposite side with two 10mm bolts holding on a plate but after snapping on of the bolts I dont want to try the other.

take it to Jiffy Lube and let them figure out how to pull the plug. Otherwise drop the tranny and work on it on the ground. Steel plugs in AL housing tend to weld themselves in.

Also where the speedo cable enters the trans.

This isn't rocket surgery. Soak the plug with a 50/50 ATF-Acetone mix for a few days, hit the area with a torch, blast the plug with some Freeze-off, and wham.

90% of the time, it works every time.

Thanks Ice. Reverse light sensor port worked great. Now for a new problem. Everything is back together. Clutch system bleed and not the clutch won't engage. Which is strange, with the other tranny the clutch struggled to release. I did have to get a new slave cylinder since the bleed port snapped in half. It looks like the pressure plate pushes the fork back and presses the piston on the slave cylinder as far back as it will allow. Maybe after working for so many days in 100+ temps with 90+ humidity I can't think straight. But the frustration level on this simple project is getting rediculous.

Also not sure everything said it would be fine but old tranny was for a 79 new one is 81

Was this a clutch job you were doing? and if so did you replace the throwout bearing with its sleeve? reason why i ask is because some of the new clutch kits they sell, uses a different throwout bearing with a sleeve, and sometimes the sleeve is a different height than the OEM one. another member on this site found this out the hard way and installed the one that came with the kit and it was shorter than the OEM one and would not allow the clutch to engage.

The clutch job was my doing but ti used original throwout bearing. Also the new tranny came with its own throwout bearing. But made sure to get one from a 2+2 which my car is. Though at this point I can't remember if they where the same size. Might have to remove tranny again to look.

No don't do that they are the same from 1970-1983,only the bearing sleeve height is where any difference is. If your clutch pedal is taking long to engage, you can do some adjustments at clutch pedal rod.

WellwI can't get the car to move unless I get the rpm to arond 6k. At which point I'm destroying my clutch plate. The fork is going to the point where it cannot press the slave cylinder's piston in any farther and the clutch will still not engage. Which to me says something is still pressing on the pressure plate and any adjustment I make on the pedal side won't allow the piston to go in further. Which means I might have the larger sleeve in and its pressing on the pressure plate when the pedal is at its static position. Unless I'm again missing something. Which is completely possible after so many hours working in the heat and then going to work I'm a little tapped.

Time to drop the transmission again. Should take about 20 minutes this time.

Ice I'd like to thank you for your help. It was the throwout bearing sleeve. It's amazing how much of a problem 1/4 of an inch can make. It's back together and running smooth. Now I just need to find a new pedal box. Exhaust and shocks and struts. Then maybe a paint job.
