S30 vs S130 Crank Pulleys for L28ET Build

Has anyone researched using a 240z - 280z lighter & smaller crank pulley for the L28ET? I still need to weigh them & measure circumference to see how big of a difference there really is, but as you can see in the pics, it's quite a bit. I am also thinking of using the n/a flywheel & clutch to save more weight on rotating mass. I've read several threads on HBZ stating that the stock S30 crank pulleys don't hold up past 7k rpm... which is fine for any stock L-Series motor.

i've read some crap about the crank pulleys sucking ***** at high rpms to. but as for the NA flywheel and clutch, just go aftermarket instead of being so damn cheap.

besides, other than needing an aftermarket pulley to go past (im going to say 7.5k rpm since its a common rev limit) since i dont think any of the L pulleys are suited for it, you need a damn good set of double valve springs, which is surprisingly expensive, which i just dont get their only freaking springs.... meh!

huh you know, if you take the metal behind the back belt off and the top belt off and flip the thing over, it'd be the same.

the out side pully is for power stearing. so if you swap. that goes unless you modify the rest of the belt system, and move the pump back a few inches.

You can't just "take the metal off". It's bonded on w/ the rubber for harmonic balancing. And just by looking at them, I can tell the individual pulleys are sized diff than the L28ET ones... though I am going to measure to make sure.

This L28ET is going in my 280z, so no power steering pulley needed... just water pump / alternator.

i know that the early s130's had a diff crank pulley setup as well. i noticed one day when i had one of each on the bench, was kinda stunned, i dont know if either has an advantage. nismopick, you may wanna spend the 250 and buy the aftermarket damper anyhoo, itll really make it nicer running and you know its not gonna come apart. i too have researched the pulley deal (for the racecar) and the old 240 ones are def. crap. while your building it, please please do yourself a favour and have the rotating mass balanced, it costs 300 or so, but can free up power and save the bottom end incase of high revs. im kicking myself for not spending the 300 when i did mine so much so that it may come out soon to be done.

i know you cant take it off i wa just noticing if you took the top pully off the ZX and the base plate off of it its nearly the same on the remaining 2.

flip the Z one over and look at em

I put a 2+2 flywheel and stock pressure plate and disk in my coupe and I havnt had any problems yet. I even had the machine shop lighten the flywheel and re-balance it. If I rember correctly they took it down from 30lbs to about 21lbs. Its a lot quieter than the Fidanza/centerforce set up I had in the 84'. Revs fast too. I havnt had a chance to run it down the quarter mile yet so I cant testify to how strong it is at a high rpm launch. I'll dump it from 3k on the street and its been holding up fine.

i used to have the 2 seater flywheel and clutch in my 2+2. now i have 2+2 flywheel and clutch. I miss the 2 seater set up i don't get that awsome Growl when thrown into nutrual, also slower revs.

So the S30 pulley is ~3lbs lighter. The alternator / water pump pulley circ is the same, and the a/c pulley is smaller. I'm going to try the S30 pulley on this setup.

you could always find a l4 motor and use its pulley, they only have 1 groove and even lighter.

Comparison of the two on the timing cover.

you just blew my mind, i've NEVER seen a crank pulley infront of a Z's timing cover before, i might just puke from the anxiety of seeing that.

You cannot remove the power steering pulley from the 1981 280zx turbo pulley.

You can only remove the tone wheel because the bolts come in from the back.
