Hope and questions for my 280 turbo

Alright; my 82 turbo started yesterday! One problem. It started while my dad held the afm open. So it seems to me that it's either getting too much fuel; or not enough air; or not enough spark. Any suggestions? And it smokes. The smoke smells of gas.

How does it idle?? I would adjust the AFM and lean it out a little and go from there.

Maybe you need a new AFM.

Does anyone know of any AFM that can just be dropped in without changing the FI ECU that is less restrictive than the flap-type used in the 280ZX?

Not that I know of. Closest thing to "drop in" is the Z31 MAF and ECU swap. You can try messing w/ a BMW afm or maybe an MR2's afm, I believe both used the flapper door style afm, but you'll be kinda on your own. No one I know has done that swap.

Perhaps someone with machining experience can fab up a larger unit that still uses the stock guts ...

80's BMW 325i I heard was larger. I haven't checked yet. They use the same flap AFM for the same type of FI system.

Actually, this was a way to cheat in SCCA racing back in the 80's. ZX racers would swap the AFM from the BMW 325 that has a bigger opening, but looks exactly like the stock AFM for the 280ZX so it wouldn't be caught at Tech.

It's a bolt on swap, but you'll need to adjust the AFM for the greater air flow.

Interesting... Do you know if the plug matches up? Or do you have to do a little rewiring.
