I have 1979 280zx 2+2. with no talking computer or no button to push to run the dianostics. I assume mine isnt the good one with all this nonsense that would make me feel cooler!

Nope '82 was the first year of the talking lady you mention. 
I have it in my '82, but my '81 does not have it. 
But you should have a button in between the speedo and tach. Every ZX cluster I have seen or posess has that check light in the middle of the cluster.
