Getting Rid Of The Rust
Getting Rid Of The Rust
I'm in the process of treating and getting rid of this rust. I just need a few pointers from somebody on here who has worked on the same areas I need to work on. Here are some photos of what I'm going to working on:

If somebody can just help me out to get started. What type of sandpaper I should use? Specific rust treatment? Any special techniques? Any help is greatly appreciated.

You don't use sandpaper, you use a wire brush on a drill for surface rust, and a grinder for deeper rust. You will need to remove the windshield to take care of what you have going on. I'm sure you will discover some rust holes, in which case are repaired by bronze braising or cutting out the section, fabbing up a new piece, and welding it in.
Body work isn't easy or cheap... times 10000 for rust repair.

that is probably the most gruesome place to work on rust. wire brush will work better than sand paper. You will probably find that the metal is holed in a lot of places. lot of people like the por15 stuff but never tried it myself. if you don't get all the rust and then treat the surface it just comes back. I have used a product called ospho and it works. Used it a lot aboard ship. If you can get it back to bare metal any inorganic zinc primer will stop it coming back. Once you do that then you have a pitted surface that you need to bondo to return to smooth. you might be better off finding a non running junker with no rust and make one car of the two.
1st of all get the car to a dry place cause that windshield gotta come off! Try using a wire cup attached to your drill gun and go over all rust area. Once that is done you`ll see what rust has to be cut out completely and welded in with a piece of new 22 or 20 gauge sheet metal (bending where it is needed). Treat with epoxy primer, bondo the new welded piece and surrounding area, sand using 80 to 220 grit, once smooth and even, spay more primer, wet sand with 220 to 600 grit, clean area. Now you should be ready for paint. After painting there is more of wet sanding the paint and also the clear coat . RESEARCH, READ, RESEARCH ,AND READ! PRACTICE MAKES PERFECT!
