Removing Fuel Sending Unit

I am trying to remove the fuel sending unit/fuel sender and I am having trouble figuring out how to go about this. The fsm is not very helpful and says to use a screwdriver. What tool/method is best to turn the retaining disc? Thanks, Jeff

Place the flathead on the base of a tab. Here's a pic (not of a Datsun... but you should get the idea):

Alright, I got it out. But the float looks good. it moves freely and there is contact with the wire coil throughout.

Is there any way to test it?

Also the reason I pulled it was because the gauge would not go to empty(around a 1/4 was lowest) when the car was running. Also it would only go to about 5/8ths when the tank was full. Could it be the gauge?

might be, you could get one on ebay for like $10 bucks. Wouldn't hurt the pocket too much to test out.

Ya sounds like a good plan. How much time/effort would it take to install the gauge? Would I have to pull the dash? Thanks, Jeff

it shouldn't be to hard to remove the gauge. my old glove box has a hole on the side so I was able to take the gauges out from there. Just make sure you disconnect the battery when you remove the gas gauge cause its also part of the amp gauge LIVE CURRENT, Thats the trickiest gauge to get out because the amp meter has these two weired connections. Other then that you shouldn't have a major problem. Ohh, I recommend that you use a magnetic screwdriver unscrew the gauges out to prevent from losing any of the bolts behind the dash. That can be a pain in the Azz.
