Drum brake rebuild (1971)?

My aluminum drums are worn over the 230mm diameter limit. Someone told me they "thought" they heard of someone who could rebuild/resurface these, though I can't imagine how. Anyone know or have ideas, or are the old drums now scrap? Thanks. Bruce in Battle Ground, WA (near Portland, OR)

Welcome to ZDriver!

Check out a freebie factory service manual at (http://www.xenons30.com/reference.html) and the other free docs. You FSM knows a lot more than anybody who posts here, trust me, though they all will disagree.

"resurfacing" a drum sounds way out of whack. What do they do? Laminate a layer of aluminum over the cylindrical wearing surface? Not likely. Forget about it.

Check out Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market for 'previously owned' brake drums. Sort your search by distance from your zip. They are all over the country like dog droppings - and cheaper, too.

Thanks and welcome again.

I am guessing these are a cast aluminum drum with a steel or cast iron friction liner. GM used a similar setup on high end muscle cars in the late 60's/early 70's. The GM drum liners were designed to be replaced. The S30 microfiche seems to indicate the 240Z drums are a manufactured one piece design. The Datsun part number for the drum is 43206-E4100. I bet a google search will reveal alternative sources.

You may be able to find used ones on ebay but you can't be sure if they are good.
