If they were a 2-seater then yes they are a sports car. Not practical for passengers so they are for sport.
A 240SX is not a sports car either.
Shame to any Porsche that has a small back seat!!!
Nissan's new Maxima ad "4-door sports car" is a joke! what idiots

Snw, you're reaching! You're just down on Zs because you don't have one. And IMO that WRX- or any other WRX- is not a sports car, fender flares and ground effects don't change anything. My mom is thinking about putting a hood scoop and fender flares on her Buick Regal....will this make it a "sports car"?

A hot hatch is an informal or slang term for a high-performance derivative of a three (or sometimes five) -door automobile. The term is more popular in Europe because of the popularity of hatchback configuration. The United States also uses the term sport compacts, however, this deviates from the original meaning of the hot hatch terminology.
also the WRX is a 2 door there and performance oriented i.e. the definition of SPORTS CAR! and the top mount intercooler that was stock on the car is why it has a scoop and those are ZG flares used to accomodate teh wider wheels, both functional. plus the ZG flare is made for the Z and is extremely popular on Z's obviously so ripping on the flare is ripping on the z tradition. plus, looking up the definition, they are sports sedan's which i alluded to but still want to consider them sports cars, in some sense they are, but not by true definition. but not to rain on anyones parade, the Z is not a sports car technically cause of the hatch

i don't get how conceded and just ignorant or condescending some people can be based on name. its not like its a geo or something and someone is trying to race it or modify it.
also, there's so many loose categories based on semantics alone that you can place a car in.... its not even worth doing it. its either a family car, a truck, and SUV, a sports car, or a compact. and that compact one is hard to classify itself i think.

Snw, I assume you're kidding when you say the Z isn't a sports car. That would make you one person out of 6 billion that don't think so. Next you're going to say a Ferrari F430 is a "hot hatchback".
And I wasn't criticizing the WRX.....they're great cars.....they're just not sports cars. For example, name one other sports car which is basically a souped up version of a economy sedan....

i don't think it matters if it's a sports car. the bottom line on the evo and wrx is that they are fun, no matter how much extra room they have. if they perform well and have some room for my bike or some chicks in the back, BONUS!
#62
well that's valuable input! i guess when evos were in their prime, i didn't really notice them because i didn't know they were anything more than a lancer, so i didn't get to notice the "coming and going"
#64
my gf's room mate's bf has a lancer i rode in a little bit back. it had the paddle shifter and stuff. it was pretty nice. it felt very firm. so it leads me to believe that the evo must be pretty substantial.

Most Mitsubishi stuff doesn't seem to be praised for longevity. Dodge stuff, at least older Dodge stuff wasn't either. So it sorta seems right that they were together. I know the 3000GT and the Stealth had alot of tranny issues. I remember a person who got one and shortly after had tranny issues. Oddly enough I just don't even see Lancers that much anymore. For a while there that was a popular car. I still see the WRX and STi every so often. Usually though they're the older ones. I still see the 350Z quite a bit, but it seems like even that has calmed down.
As for this whole sports car argument, I'd have to agree that a sports car is generally a 2-door or usually a 2-seater, but you have so many variations that it's basically been changed. Manufacturers want to call their cars sports cars so people will buy them. Then you have people who say the 280ZX isn't a sports car. It has 2-doors and 2-seats, but it's called a GT car.

mistubishi makes great and reliable cars, the older talons.eclipses coulda used better trans' but the EVO was great, never had an issue, i still see the evo 8/9 around ALL the time, i don't go a singel day without seeing 2, especially since there are 2 at school, same thing with the past few generations of STI's and WRXs i see them alot since theres 3 at my school and my neighbors BF drives one oh and my really good friend drives one. the new evoX's though are a different story, they are pretty great car (even though i didn't orignially thing they would be) but their aftermarket still isn't tapped into that well, so everyone is sticking with the older 4G63 motor Evo's thats all. this summer i think we'll be seeing alot more nice new cars, like Genesis' evo X's camaro's 370Z's new STI's challengers (though im seeing more and more of those already) and those likes.... since it's a new year there should be 1500 more GTR's coming to the US as well. and the ZR1. just give it some time my friends.
ADMIT IT MIKE! the 2 door WRX is a sports car!

it's sleek. what do you describe as sleek? a hatch? can't do that, sorry. as for the back seat, though it has one, have you ever sat in one? not anything i would EVER call full-size. besides, if that were true then the GTR wouldnt be a sports car, not a single one of them.
#70
umm... the GTR is not a sports car. Who said it was?
Doesn't Volvo have a 400hp stationwagon? Still not a sports car now matter now much power you put down or how many wheels are driving it.
Barbie Corvette is a real sports car. Only 2 seats and no doors!

I don't see anything that "sleek" about the WRX. Take away the hood scoop and the ground effects, and it looks just like a billion other sedans out there on the road. You're not to confuse a Vette....or a Miata for that matter with too many sedans. As far as the back seat, I'm sure its bigger than the one that was in my 280ZX 2+2.

I daily a WRX and I don't consider them sportscars. 4 door WRX would be a sports sedan and 2 door WRX is a sports coupe.
I think the classic defination of a sports car is something that has 2 seats, 2 doors, and lightweight.
