Any of you guys do ice racing?
My daily commute in the occasional ice/snow we get here is as close to "ice racing" as you'll find here in the sunny southeast.
But your post brings to mind a question that pops into my mind every time it snows here. Can studded snow tires still be purchased? My understanding is that they've been outlawed almost everywhere because of the damage the metal studs do to the asphalt.
I would like to have a set, mounted and ready to go, for the times the roads get a little icey around here. And who knows, some fool might even want to race.

yup, they can be.
www.vulcantire.com has a few studs for sale. Most of the studded racing tires are sharpened bolts (aka, the home made studded racing tire). Vulcan Tire also sells chains too.
For non studded, IMO the two best tires are the Nokian (yes, the cell phone company) Hakkapelitta Q (you can get these studded). And this next one is debatable, but everyone I know and respect agrees with me, Green Diamond makes tires that has little peices of carbite in the tread. They do this on all their tires. Biggest difficulty You can fine the GD's online here http://www.greendiamondtire.com/ and you can get information on the Nokians here http://www.nokiantires.com/newsite/index.html
My recommendation would be to get either the Hakka Q's or one of the green diamonds (Icelander is the best ice racing tire, and it can be used all year round. The more aggressive tread pattern will work better on snow though, but the icelander is still no slouch). For cheap easy to get tires, the wintermaster plus with studs aren't bad at all. I have the studless version on my prelude only because they offer the only reasonably priced 185/70/13, lol.
