New member to this group. I have a 79 280zx and am not getting fuel. Before replacing the fuel pump I wanted some advice. I disconnected the wires to the fuel pump and hooked up a test light with alligator clips. ( one to each lead). When I turn the switch to run position, the light illuminates for only a split second and then goes out. If I turn the key to start the car, the light stays lit while starting. Does anyone know if this is how it is supposed to work or does this indicate a bad relay? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

 

That is normal. Do you have the Factory Service Manual for your car? It has the test procedure for this.

Going to siphon out the fuel and change the fuel pump when I get the part

 

Ohh the taste of gasoline in the wee hours of the morning..............brings back memories. Today, with the price of fuel, it would be felonies!
