3rd and 4th gear grind
Hey guys, this is my first post considering I just bought an 03 touring edition yesterday. I bought it from my best friend and every time I put it into 3rd or 4th gear it grinds very loud. My friend can drive it without grind and slides it into every gear like butter. I have been driving standards for about 4 years now and I can not put the car into 3 or 4 gear without grinding the hell out of it. Any advice or know how I can fix this? Other than that, the car is great, every other gear is smooth as butter. I have just been switching from 2nd gear to 5th in order not to make myself look like a dumb *** in town when it grinds bad. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hey man, would welcome you to the forums, but this is my first post as well :P Registered and saw your post right away as I have nearly the same problem with my Z. But regardless, welcome to the Z ownership club!
Anyway, your problem...
My gear grinds in 3rd as well if shifted "aggressively", it's a common problem with our cars unfortunately and I believe is actually a recall. I am going to check if this can still be fixed even if the vehicle is out of warranty.
When I first bought my car back in Oct., I had no problems. Slowly but surely I began getting a grind in 3rd, but if shifted at low RPM's and with the finesse of a fine touch you can shift in to these gears without grinding... Just takes a few tries before you figure out how exactly it catches.
I'm going to be taking my car to the dealer to see what they say and will keep you updated... I have a feeling it's something to do with the synchros..
