A new Z problem...

Few days ago I was driving with my friend down the freeway, and then suddenly my car feels as if the overdrive was switched off, but the light didnt turn on. So I turned my overdrive switch off and the light turned on, then when I switched it back on and the rpm went back to normal... After a while it goes back up again as if the overdrive was off and my rpm shoots up. This happened a few times and suddenly it stopped. I tried checkin my OD wires to see if they were somehow touching. I then cut the wires n covered them with tape so they wont touch, but as soon as i hit the freeway, my rpm started high, and it kept going up and down again. Has this happen to anyone? Does anyone know what to do...? thanks for the help
