It sounds like a missfire. Does it do it @ idle? If you put a rag over the tail pipe it should always blow the rag out, if it periodicaly sucks it into the exhaust you have a missfire. Are there any codes stored in the ECM? It is located behined the passenger side kickplate on the floor in front of the door. Take off the screws holding it to the wall and pop it out, dont unplug the wires, you might have to wrestle it a bit. Check the codes(Refer to the manual if you have it), if I remeber corectly you have to flip the toggel switch on then turn the screw all the way clockwise. The LEDs will flash, red signafies incriments of ten, green is ones, so two red flash's+ three greens=23, thats your code. There should be a reference chart for codes on the back of the ECM, this will give you the best start. Because it sounds like a miss but it could be as simple as an intake leak or any other kind of thing. Check the ECM first and then think of any other details that might be usefull, and check back.

ok so these are all the codes that were blinking 11,wich is the crank angle sensor, 13 cylinder head temp. sensor, 23 idle switch circut,24 nuetral switch,31 load signal circut or ecu,and 41 air temp sensor or circut. I did buy a thick manual for my car and it does list all the propable cuases for these codes, for #23 it says the idle switch signal is open, but i dont kno what that is. thoughts?

also i forgot to say this in the begining, when the engine is cold it idles very high and this problem does not happen until it cools down and the idle goes down

I would suspect that the CHTS is bad and throwing all of the other codes with it.

Z car barbie is probally right, the CHTS are always going out on these cars. Just make sure you at least clean the connector or better yet replace the subharness with the sensor. You need a special socket to replace that sensor unless some one has a trick to get it out. Then clear the ECM drive it and re-check the ECM to see if any codes come back.

It is behined the inner T-belt cover on the driver side head, if you look behined the water pump and to the right there will be a harness, trace that to the head and look for the yellow conector. Personally I have always used a special socket that looks like a minuatre O2 socket due to limited space, but you might be able to get it out with a deep/medium 12 point socket and some patience, you will probally need a swivel cause' it is tight. Good luck

There is a good post somewhere on how to get it out without taking apart the engine. Basically it was you bust off the plastic connector on the old unit which allows you to get a socket on the unit. Then use an oversize six point socket to get the new unit in there by cocking it at an angle. Do a search on it with google. There were some other tips in there but that was the basic. Wish I could remember the link but I just filed the facts in the old carbon based computer memory.

that post is on z31.com. You should check it out before you start but what I said above is the basic.

I just noticed you are out in Sequim. I'm on whidbey. Check out our z car club at zccw.com. I've got 85T burgundy and 96TT red. Good luck on the CHTS I need to do that on the 85 plus thermostat is bad but can't pry it out of the hands of my son (loves that car) offered him a 280zxt for free but no deal.
