6 Speed Tranny
Maybe this is a stupid question as I have seen next to nothing on it for the 90 - 96 models. But does anyone know of a 6 speed transmission swap? I know nissan had plans to produce a 6 speed 300zx however they were discontinued when the model was cut. Anyway if anyone has any suggestions for a swap would love to hear em.

I do believe the later years in the JP market came with a 6 speed, but are pretty damn expensive and tough to get a hold of.

1. Some people have swapped in a 350Z 6-speed using a custom bracket.
2. HKS 6-speed costs nearly $10,000.
3. It's not worth it... for any reason... trust me. The 350Z's trans can't handle the power that the stock trans can, and the gearing of the stock 5-speed is 100% perfect for the 300ZX. There is no advantage to having an extra gear. Shifting takes around a half second (often more if you're inexperienced) to complete... having one more gear means that when you want to accelerate hard through the gears, you're going to have to shift one more time, and that means you're going to be about a half second slower for no real reason (don't talk to me about gearing, like I already said, the stock 5-speed has the perfect gearing for our powerband). If your car is a Twin Turbo, that's also another time that you're off-throttle and you'll have to build some boost again.

Those should hold you over.

I just did some research on the 350Z 6-speed trans swap (in response to a thread on 300ZXClub.com), and found out some interesting facts...
Here are the gear ratios... (keep in mind, the smaller the gear, the lower the RPM to go faster, so a smaller top gear will result in lower RPMs for the same speed)
350Z | 300ZX
3.794 | 3.214
2.324 | 1.925
1.624 | 1.302
1.271 | 1.000
1.000 | 0.752
0.794
This means that the 300ZX with a stock trans will be at a LOWER rpm in 5th gear than a 300ZX at the same speed in the 6th gear of a 350Z trans.
For example, a stock Twin Turbo 300ZX travelling 75mph will be at 2840 rpm in 5th gear (assuming 245/45/16 tires). The same 300ZX with a 350Z transmission will be at 2994 rpm at 75mph!
Not to mention, the larger 6th gear also means a lower top end. Assuming you have a JWT ECU (rev limited at 7,450) and the power to top the car out mechanically, the 300ZX TT with the stock trans will top out at 197mph, as compared to 187mph with the 350Z's 6-speed.
And as already stated, the 6-speed from the 350Z cannot handle as much power as the stock 5-speed from the 300ZX.
