six speed tranny?

Is there a 6 speed trans out there that will bolt up to the l28e? I have an 82 280zx na and I feel like I need the extra gear for highway travel. I will be doing the speed limit, which is 70, and my tach reads 4k rpm. If there isn't a 6 speed that will work, then how can I lower my rpm on the highway?

Hey, just lurking for this post - but 4K seems high for 5th gear at 70MPH. I have little to no experience with 280s. I think my Z31 does 70MPH at under 3K, could be wrong....

(Edit: Just checked it out today. My '86T does a steady 70 at 2600 RPM.)

So my question is did you switch something out or was your 280 factory-geared to run that high - in 5th? Thanks for the info!

It should be around 2500, no where near 4000.

Thought so, Evan. So Hunter, am wondering if your tachometer/cable set-up is out of whack. Even if your exhaust is 100% good - that Z would probably seem to be screaming at 4K. So, are you sure about the cause of your RPM-tachometer problem?

(Very cool link below, Nismo!)

4k in 5th gear you'd be going ~102mph:

5 spd

I find my 5 spd a great trans w/ close match of gearing. My car is needing shifter bushing. I haven't tried slammin any gears as I don't know if it will slide into that gear or hang up Soon come.

Yeah, this. I use my tach as a half-assed speedometer cause the real one is firmly planted at 0mph. I borrowed a GPS once and memorized a few important speeds (45, 70, 100) and 100mph was pretty much exactly at 4k

Yep, at 70 in 5th my '82 is just below 3k. At 3k it's between 75-80. So I would agree that 100 would be 4k. Of course my needle is a little loose causing it to jump all over, so I use my K.I.T.T. speedometer app and it works quite well.
