Where should I go for service?

Hello,
I took my 92 300ZX NA to a mechanic yesterday because it was running rough and getting much worse gas mileage than normal. He said that an exhaust valve in cylinder 2 is not seating properly. He did a compression test. He said he doesn't know why it is not seating properly. Apparently there are a variety of things that could be the cause. He said that this repair is beyond his capabilities and that I need to find an import tuner shop. He didn't have any recommendations for where I should take it. I live in Stevens Point, WI and there are no import tuner shops here. There is a Nissan dealer in town, but my mechanic didn't think it was a good idea to take my car there. Does anyone have any recommendations for where I should take it? Ideally, I'd like to take it somewhere like Madison, Oshkosh, Appleton, Green Bay, or Wausau.

I'm also interested in your opinion regarding whether or not a Nissan dealer is a good choice.

Thanks.

I take my 90 TT to Gary’s in Delafield, Wisconsin

Not sure if this will help you, but I’ve had nothing but good service from Gary’s Auto Repair in Delafield, Wisconsin.

It’s this little shop in a little town but drive by and you’ll see Audi R8s and 911s and today I dropped off my 90 TT for service and there was a beautiful 92 NSX with 50k miles and a supercharger kit in for repair. People in the area really trust Gary’s.

They’ve done my timing belt, fixed difficult electrical issues, found a boost leak…and changed brakes and normal stuff. I’ve been taking my Z there for over ten years.

It’s kinda far from Stevens Point but thought I’d let you know.

As far as dealers: I personally think that a Nissan dealership, at least a semi-reputable one (not many negative Google reviews for example), and one that’s not really tiny…I think they are perfectly fine to do 95 percent of Z32 work just fine. This is my opinion. I’d let a dealer do a timing belt, clutch…their techs will be following established procedures using real Nissan parts. But if you have stuff like an aftermarket ECU or idk injectors and such, a dealership suddenly becomes a less interesting proposition to me.

Lastly, an exhaust valve isn’t some magical mysterious thing. Sounds to me like your mechanic may simply be a bit hesitant because he’s never done any real work on a Z32. Maybe it’s good he admitted he’s not comfortable getting into the motor. I would think a dealership could get this kind of thing done just fine. Again, just my feeling, my opinion.
