You should be able to use any NA computer from 90-95 if you have a 5-speed. If you have an auto then you need the computer for an auto. You can use an ECU from an auto car on a 5-speed you will just get a trouble code for the transmission. In 96 they went to OBDII so those ECUs are different.

Here's a link to verify the ECU numbers.

You also need to differentiate between Cali and Fed emissions.

That's true if you use a Cali ECU it will be expecting an EGR temp signal and will give you a code 35 without it. Will this cause any problems? If you use an auto ECU in a 5-speed you get a trouble code there also but doesn't appear to cause any problems. I think they added the EGR temp sensor to both Fed & Cal cars in 94-95 so for Twitch it might not make a difference either way.

Twitch I may have an extra ECU that I might part with. It's Fed and for an auto. I'll check when I get home.

Yes, especially in this case. Upgraded ECUs for all 90-95 Z32's (assuming same specifications, such as transmission, motor, injectors, intake) are identical. The only difference between upgraded ECUs between model years are injector changes, really.

Easiest way it so look into where the car was first sold (CarFax). lol If it was sold at a dealership in Cali, it's a Cali emissions car. Otherwise, you can check for the EGR temp sensor.

One of the digits in the VIN can also tell, but as TwinTurbo.NET's bookmarks are down, I can't get to the writeup that has that information.

can you use a manual ecu in a automatic ? this is the final question. :-) a 1991 ecu 8bit can be used in a 1993 300zx made for the 16 bit ?

I'm running an older 8-bit ecu with an Ashspec fed. chip in my '93 Cali car.
