Your post is pretty hard to understand... but welcome to ZDriver! Have you checked the ATF level?

after you check the level...change the fluid, the filter plugs easily on the 4n71b trans.. DO NOT FLUSH THE TRANSMISSION!!... this will lead to certain death of the trans

Sounds like you might have some slop in the linkage too. Also, please use better punctuation. It'd make what you're trying to say a little easier to understand.

Do you mean ENGINE oil and filter, or TRANSMISSION fluid (ATF) and filter?

Ah... not to get technical, but we call transmission oil "fluid" as it's quite different than engine oil. Did you use ATF (red auto trans fluid) ?

When you do a total fluid change, especially in a high mileage automatic transmission, the detergents will clean off all of the build up that is needed to hold that puppy together. Once all the gunk gets cleaned off from these detergents, things start to go south fast. There is also a temperature sensor that will not allow the car to go into overdrive until the transmission has warmed up. They get quirky from time to time too.

What is wrong with "flushing" the tranny, instead of just draining the fluid and putting new in? The flush takes the fluid out of the tourqe converter as well as whats just setting in the tranny.

z31 autos were not known for their reliability. the tranny in my '87 auto went to hell at about 185k. how many miles are on your car? it might just be time for a new transmission.
