Speedo Pinion Gear Removal (how to)

Anyone know how to remove the speedo's pinion gear and replace it? I think that might be my issue with my speedo reading the speed only on occasion.

pretty easy, remove the one bolt that holds the retainer clip on and then wiggle/turn it back and forth as you pull it out. But would bet thats not the problem, either end of the cable could be slid out just a touch or the ends rounded (instead of flat) or binding inthe cable sleeve.

well... as stated in my other post... the digital gauge (86 auto n/a w/ digi dash) will read zero from time to time. When I say time to time I dont mean for a little bit. It can be like an hour without sign of a real speed. I replaced the speedo cable and the speed sensor. I've double checked the connection on both ends of the speedometer cable and they're good too. I can't imagine both cable's being rounded off. Any other ideas still would be greatly appreciated.

When the speedo goes to zero here are some other things that happen:

- Acts as if the kick down pedal no longer works (wont downshift for speed... but will when I decelerate)
- My "G" meter (which tell's how much of a "gangsta" I am... lol j/k) goes to zero.
- My car loses a little pep (probably related to the lack of downshift)
- My odometer stops working
- my gas milage gauge stops working (reads zero or a really high number ... aka 97mpg)

Keep the ideas coming i really appreciate it

yeah... I'm afraid its electrical too... this is easier to fix so I thought I'd try it first. Anyone know where to look if it is electrical?
