People who raise their wipers before snow
People who raise their wipers before snow
Does it **** you off and irritate you just a little when you see others doing it?
Well, I turned the wipers on and shut off the car to keep the wipers away from the bottom of the window. Could be that less ice forms down at the bottom..but all in all, you have still got the snow and its always a PITA.

It's just a trick so you don't have to reach in, dig for them, and pull them up when you clean your windshield. When they are out of the way, it makes it easier to brush off... get it?
I used to carry a snow brum in my car... but that was back before global warming. Haven't had a big snow storm here in a few years (I mean 1ft+ at a time).

Around here we do it because ICE. You can go out in the morning and find your wipers in the down position encased in an inch of clear-as-glass ice. Where do you start... Locks and doors freeze too so you can't get into the car to run the heater. So it's up and out position for the wipers. They look like your car is holding up two middle fingers to the weather. Best you can do. Or build a garage.
So what do you do with the Z? The wipers do not bend out...
That's funny. I always keep a couple (6-8) of good quality wine corks in my console. Can't remember where I got 'em. :-) If my Z is outside for an ice storm, I prop the wiper arms up with a cork. Keeps the blades off the glass in case of freezing. I'm a big fan of good quality wine corks now.

My '86T in cold storage
You can't tell from the photo (taken today) but there are two excellent wine corks holding the wiper blades off of the windshield: A robust Cabernet Sauvignon '04 and a vintage Annie Green Springs, late 2013. I guess I can re-use them after the Spring thaw in April, although my console does hold others. I never run out.
