my car died!
hey, while i was driving home, my z just died, i think it might have shuddered a bit or made a noise, but i can't remember, we're thinking it could be the timing belt, is this a normal problem with older z's?, or does anyone know what this could be? i have an '84 na, with about 160k miles on it, has this ever happened to anyone? i only drove it about 4 miles from my school when it just died, i had it towed back to my place and when i try to start it, it sounds like its spinning too freeley(freely), hm, maybe i should use this as an excuse to switch up to a z32 na and sell the 84, anyways, any help would be appreciated

Re: my car died!
it is an interferance head.. if you tried to start it with a busted timing belt, you might have heard some metalic sounds.. ie pistons hitting valves.. unless they happened to be in just the right position...may have bent some..
see if you can turn it over with a socket wrench.. if it stops while cranking, your hitting something...
check it out.. probably not the belt.. if so.. you may need $1-2k for some valves and head work..

$1-2k??? holy crap, i don't think my car is even worth that much, hmm, i don't remember hearing anything bad from the engine when i was trying to start it, so i hope its not hitting something, damnit, o well, i took it to the shop today, and they're trying to figure out what's wrong with it, so i should know in a day or so, hopefully its nothing much, orrr, hopefully it is so i can finally get a z32

Timing belt. You won't here any valves hitting pistons, they only tap onetime, then they are bent, they don't keep on hitting. Take off the distributor cap, turn over the engine, does the rotor spin, probably not.
Cost for repairs? Same as a valve job, $200.00-$400.00

that's the price for fixing the heads along. The price you'd pay for someone to pull the heads and then fix them and then reattach them is much much greater.

Re: my car died!
i took the distributor cap off today and it didn't spin at all, and i accidentally dropped one of those small screws somewhere in the engine bay (damn!) when i tried to start the car, , what doest that mean?, are the valves bent if this is happening?

Re: my car died!
What it means is the timing belt is broken. It does not necessarily mean that the valves are bent. But that's usually a pretty good chance they are.
Put on a new timing belt and check compression. If compression is fine, no valves are bent. If compression is not fine, it's gonna be $$$ or time to get it fixed.

Re: my car died!
well, got the intake and front end of the engine off yesterday afternoon, and the timing belt had some teeth that look like they had been wearing away for quite some time, so, replaced that, checked the valves and none appear to be bent/broken, but the car still won't do anything, I tried to start it and the valves on one side don't seem to be setting down into place, they move up and down a little but not all the way, im gonna get the heads off this afternoon to check the pistons, any ideas on what's wrong now?
