my z died

well I was driving to work today and my oil pressure gauge started waving slightly abnormally back and forth and I was dumb and thought to myself..ill just drive the last 2 miles to work it should be fine its old and reacts odd sometimes...well 1 mile from work the oil pressure gauge drops to 0 and my baby instantly putters out. is she done for or will a new oil pump do the trick? I pulled into the next parking lot I could as soon as it hit 0, about 80-100 feet.

at least pull the oil filler cap and check to see if the cam has oil on it. If it does, at least you'll know that the engine was still getting oil and really shouldn't have had damage done. I find it hard to believe that all of a sudden the oil stopped flowing and the engine seized up without making some rod knock or something.

no lights on the instrument cluster went on. the red light on the oil pressure gauge did not go on while it was swaying but when it just dropped it did, but at that point I didnt need a light to tell me something was wrong, something was clearly already wrong

i betcha its just the sending unit, there is a relay that stops the fuel pump when the guage reads zero, change the sender and start that puppy up. youll be fine. or at least know if its the problem. if that doesnt work, get a manual oil guage on the port and check for sure. dont go just chucking a oil pump on it. its usually the simple stuff.

iffn the oil pump ghad died, the car would have sounded like the 7 furies of hjell revisited ----rattling and spinning and all kinds of rotten sounds before the big cracking and grinding and broken everything noses.........replace yer sending unit and enjoy........relax...........if it is not noisey it is working......if you have 200k miles on yer car, change the oil pump. even if it works......it wont soon enuff.........i know......btdt.......

this is news to me, I never knew these cars had a shut off should the oil pressure drop. That's a good feature, do many cars have that?

lots of cars have it, ppl just do know it. its mostly incase you roll it, and the car is running, the gas dont keep feeding the potential fire!! my dogs butt gets sun every time she goes out, but she has a curly tail!

So, what prize do I get when he finds out it had nothing to do with the oil pump, sender or any other "oil" related part and is instead the last gasps of a failing alternator with a bad voltage regulator?

Rod.

thats why we got a forum, is to bounce ideas off everyone, you get to very good suggestions, but a bad alternator never came to mind simply beacuse he was driving and the only guage that dropped (as per his description) was the oil gauge. it is a very good suggestion, so whats the final fix???
