manual to auto swap na88
I've got an 1988 n/a300zx auto trans,no reverse, drive,or overdrive, factory manual leads me to believe clutch pack is smoked, was going to rebuild, but have learned auto is a piece of crap.
Everything I read about this auto trans leaves me wondering why there was not a recall? can any of you tell me the particulars of years I can, and cannot use, electrical hookups,etc..I'm being led to believe this is a borg warner t-5,can I borrow trans from another source,or better off sticking with nissan?Does it have to be 300ZX?
Will I need different wiring harness for trans? Can I use auto Computer? What do I disconnect?
I'm a street rodder not used to dealing with all this emissions crap,sensors,computers,etc..Any help will be appreciated, point me in the right direction,if somebody would write a swap manual for this they could sell it for $20 a piece, and make a small fortune.

Re: manual to auto swap na88
the automatic transmission was a Nissan unit. The Borg Warner T5 is a 5 speed unit that only came in the 84-86 turbos. In 87, they switched to a much stronger Nissan 5 speed transmission.
The best swap will be to go with a transmission you pull out of another Z31. Anything else will require a lot more work.
Go to the z31.com message board and read the "FAQ you" section for details on the auto to manual swap.

I have an near perfect looking 86 turbo. The only thing i didn't like about the car was that it was an auto. Then the tranny stopped working. So I took it to Zcar atlanta and they converted it to an manual. Holly @#*$ what difference this is a real sports car after all ! I needed a new clutch, rear main seal, plus a new drive shaft that pushed the price with install to about $2,300 ouch! But man it is worth it

$2300 for a fix to a trashed automatic doesn't sound too bad to me after replacing the automatic in my '90 Pathfinder. I hate automatics. Have fun with your Turbo. I have an 87T and while it makes me crazy with some of the stuff I've done, like leaking tail lights, and transmission mounts that disintegrated, when it's running sweet it is soooo sweet.
