how do i choose a starter?

hey guys i have an 87 non turbo and my starter has some chewed up teeth and i need to get a new one before all the teeth are useless and i cant start the car at all.

the problem is i dont know which to choose. i read that all the remanufactured starters and alternators are the same low quality no matter whos name is on the box. so my question is has anyone replaced their starter with a starter that they can recommend? or where to get one that isnt remanufactured? whats your take on a junkyard starter? please let me know

never had a problem with reman alternator or starter. Get mine from NAPA. You read too many people with gripes and don't hear about the ones that had no problems.

Remans are remans... Parts store reman alternators do have a tendency to fail because they use cheap parts. Luckily they know this and usually offer lifetime warranties. A good read: Remanufactured Alternator Failures

As for starters, I haven't had problems with remans... and I have used a few OEM junk yard specials too. Pick your poison.

Your local Nissan dealership. Likely 2 or 3 times the cost of a reman unit. The other option would be a Ford dealership. Ask how much a new starter for a Mercury Villager van with a VG30 engine would cost. Pull the old starter for comparison to make sure it is a physically compatible unit.
