Fuel sending unit removal question

Last night I tried to get the fuel sending unit out but ran into a snag. It appears there are 8 "bumps" around the perimeter of the sending unit (arrows pointing them below), but only 4 notches in the tank to align them with (that I can see). Is this just an optical illusion, or is there a trick I haven't found in the FSM or any other posts here? The one problem I had was getting hold of the top, but I missed the part in the FSM that showed using an "appropriate wire" to pull it with... maybe it was just a lack of effort on my part...

Thanks in advance...

Successfully removed it... just had to use an "appropriate wire" and a little extra tug... it was happy with where it had been for the last 27 years...

one of the few times when the greater force theory works without irreparable damage. I had to do the same.

I just bought an 84, that has sending unit issues, and I would like to know exactly how to get it out.

are you too lazy to download the fsm and read it. there is a pic at top of post. in back round cover on gas tank. two screws, eight nuts (maybe six) and you will see what is in the pic. there is a wire loop attached to the unit. use a pry bar thru that and a piece of 2x to lever the unit out of the tank. Don't smoke while doing this nor have open flames available.

By the way, when you replace the sending unit, check the fuel level it reports to the gauge before you close everything back up. My replacement sending unit reported about 4 gallons LESS than was in the tank. That makes Betty bitch earlier than she should. Better than 4 gallons MORE than in the tank, sure, but still a pain in the butt. SO check what the sender says and, if needed, adjust it however that is done on the unit you put in.
