What is intake porting?

hey i know this has been asked a thousand times, but i want to know what i can do myself for a very small price that would slighly increase my performance, and i came across intake manifold porting, what is that and what does it exactly do? i'm thinking abuot installing a 2.5" exhaust header, and maybe "porting" for a possible +hp of....1 maybe 2 lol

porting it for a 60mm tb and porting out the runners will help u. dont be asking to much with hp though without other upgrades.

true intake porting is a biotch. they gut the manifold in half shave it down and weld it back together. other wise they just port match the intake mouth to the TB which would be a 60mm.... i think i might have a 60mm weber with my new car... came with it not on it. gotta check though to be sure.

ive tooking off my intake manafold and got me a 1990 240sx throttle body i did all the work my self. i went down bought a strong iron drill bit to take out huge chucks of aluminum while drilling your throttle body open useing a dremel i honed it to be smooth as a babys *** . Then i took 800 wet grit sand paper and polished it to shinyness ! looks damn good and i could notice a different amount of air flow in my 1982 280zx turbo. im in the process right now of learning how to " port and polish " my p-90a head. Any body with any ideas ? meening whats the cheapest place to buy the porting and polish head kit ? besides EBAY ! LOL

So, porting an intake manfold can be compared to Boring a cylinder? Does that mean you're increasing the amount of air that can come in through the intake? How much hp gain or is it even noticable?

There's about 4.2 billion websites on porting. The idea is to increase air flow... but if you increase the air, you also need to increase the fuel. Just porting a couple parts won't do anything. Like 260zTurbo said... it is used in combination w/ other upgrades. There's other threads on here that talk about porting too. It's really not necessary unless you are doing tons of other things to the motor... and if done incorrectly, will hinder performance more than help.

Porting your manifolds or head isn't really necessary unless you're looking at some other serious mods. You'd be surprised at how fast you can make your Z by making sure it's running absolutely perfectly. At that point, you should be able to smoke nearly every Civic you encounter on the street. Put in a nice suspension and pull out all the unnecessary weight and you'll really improve the cars handling and straight line performance.

How much would it cost to have your intake professionally ported?

Depends on who you take it to, and how much you want done. There isn't a set cost for intake porting. Remember... professional labor isn't cheap.

Only if you don't know what you are doing.

Do you know what you are doing?

For the TB swap you don't necessarily need to port the runners, but you do need to port match the intake neck for the larger throttle body (otherwise you just push the bottleneck back about an inch). You also need the turbo AFM w/ n/a guts. Lots of threads on here about 60mm TB upgrades.
