Very new to forums...rattle near clutch/tranny area...
I have a NA 83 280zx and it was a steal. 2k and drives pretty damn good. BUT there is a pretty loud rattle/clanging noise coming from the bottom of my stick. now I got a new tranny rebuilt and a brand new clutch (which was greatly needed since my damn clutch virgin *** is still learning it) and the noise isn't as bad. it still manages to come back after I go in reverse while the clutch is engaged. when im in neutral the rattle is there but its realllllyyyy soft. once I engage the clutch and put her in gear it doesn't sound anymore. any suggestions?? it will be greatly appreciated.

You have your factory manual, right? It's at XenonS130 - S130 Reference with other good docs - and they're free.
Question: Are you saying the rattle was there, then you replaced the tranny and clutch - and the rattle is still there?
Is the stick OEM or aftermarket?
Thanks

When the car is off. Try to shake the exhaust, shake the shifter handle. Rock the car from side to side. Do you hear the same clanking? Could be exhaust touching something, could be shields. When its in gear, with the clutch engaged, the motor torques up and it could move your exhaust enough to touch something.
Start with simply not so scary stuff!
Have fun learning stick, 280zx is good to learn on.
