Tranny Question
Tranny Question
Got a 82 n/a and having an issue with my tranny. one day i was comin from work and had been in ATL traffic for about 45 min i got on the offramp and was waiting for the light in neutral. when the light turned green i went to put the car in 1st and it wouldnt go. i finally had to force it in. that has been going on for about a week. most of the time i can push the clutch in firmly and it will go in to gear easier. does anybody have an idea about what this could be?
Check your clutch fluid reservoir... prolly low on fluid. Also look under the drivers dash @ the clutch pedal. Look for leaking fluid on the firewall. Sometimes the clutch master cylinder seals go out & leak brake fluid, as well as the slave cyl.

yeah i thought the same thing so i added some fluid but the problem remains. but it had gotten bad where i had to really force it in 1st & 2nd but 3rd & 4th would grind when i tried to shift. but for some reason this morning on the way to work it was as smooth as silk. i just went to lunch a couple hours ago and it was pretty much smooth but i know that there has to be a problem so i'll check on the leaking fluid on firewall. Thanks
Jack up the car & have someone pump the clutch pedal while you watch the slave cylinder on the tranny.... if it's not moving much, you know it's a hydraulic prob. If it is moving the correct distance, you may have syncro probs.
Bad!
Well i took my car to a tranny shop. now of course the guy said that there r internal problems. he used some technical auto terms to say my synchros are bad. i thought the synchros would scape and grind at all times but when the car is off then i can move through the gears easily. does that have anything to do with the synchros?
If the car won't go into gear when the engine is running & the clutch pedal is in, there's only two main probs:
-Something in the clutch hydraulic system / clutch itself has failed & isn't engaging the clutch disc to stop the gears from rotating.
-The synchros / gears have been ground enough that they won't grab each other when engaging.
