Stuck Valve Adj Lock Nut

I have a valve adjustment lock nut that will not move. I first obtained a ultra long wrench. Bent the wrench. Then Obtained a 17mm Crows Foot (Gear Wrench). The Crows foot will either break or round off the nut.

I have air impact tools, but it looks like I would have to cut the rocker arm off in order to use an impact socket. I have searched for the Datsun Valve adjusting tool, but can't find anyone that has one in the US.

I'm out of ideas. (short of removing the head or cutting the rocker arm)

Hopefully someone will have some suggestions.

Just to clarify, you're using TWO wrenches, right?

I'm using two wrenches exactly as pictured to adjust the valves. I have adjusted the other 11 valves, but am unable to bust the lock nut loose on this one valve. Set the clearance at .008 intake and .010 exhaust. This car was parked almost 20 years ago, after an successful attempt to repair it after it hydro-locked. (Failed head gasket)

Some of the clearances were over .030 and two of the lash caps had come off. Made for a really noisy valve train.

This may well be a pointless exercise, since I am sure the head will have to come off. I believe all of the valve seals are bad or were not properly installed since the car smokes very badly and has oil fouled plugs in all cylinders.

This was one of the plugs from when the car was parked, but five minutes time and the new plugs look just as bad.

I giving up on breaking the jam nut loose. I started the car and while the valve train noise was greatly reduced, there is a great amount of blue/gray smoke. So much smoke, that if I had neighbors they would probably call the fire department.

I think the time has come to remove the head. My first choice would be to order a replacement engine or at the very least get another from the junk yard. However since this is my girl friends car, she wants the engine in it restored and not a replacement engine.

Since it has come to rebuilding what's in the car. I need to start obtaining parts for the rebuild. I'm now of the opinion that the rings are shot since I get a very thick cloud when I rev the engine. Thick as in you can't see and breath.

I guess I will start with the head and have it rebuilt. Since the cam is in pretty sorry shape, I will need a replacement cam. I will start another thread on cam replacement since this is another topic.

Yeah, sounds like a head job is needed there. Mucho work but you end up with great performance resulting from your own work. That's the reward.

When I face that frozen-bolt thing I keep telling myself that there IS a gap between bolt threads and hole threads. They began life as separate parts. The bolt is locked up with crud, corrosion or just a lack of lube. Loosening it is by heat or vibration now - just to break the corrosion lock or get some lube back in the gap. That bolt wants to come out.

Anyway, just do the whole head. You're in there anyway and the results will be worth the labor. That Z is definitely worth it.

Depending on your style, not too late to check http://www.car-part.com/ for parts. You never know...
