Rusted floorpan/tranny tunnel.

Hey all,

I just pulled the carpet and found the drivers side floorpan rusted through pretty bad (the seat supports bounce through the car ). I have a half inch hole on the side of the tranny tunnel too.

I know I can buy and weld in replacement floor pans but will I have problems if the side of the tranny tunnel has a rusted hole in it?

Any suggestions on what to do?

(sorry about quality -- cell phone)

Thanks for any info.

Your three options:

Patch it.
Replace it.
Leave it be.

The point of the post was not to determine the obvious. Sorry if I was too vague.

I was wondering how much structural support I loose by having the side of the tranny tunnel rusted through.

It doesn't look all that rusted "THROUGH" to me... I've seen a lot worse.

That's a relief.

I guess I'll just cut out the pans and have someone weld in new ones. What's the best way to patch the tiny hole on the tunnel?

Thanks for the info btw, mucho appreciated.

Grind the hole till ya get good metal, make a metal patch, weld in place.

Here's a before and after on an 83 280zx I worked on:

That floor pan looked like it needed a little attention...

Be wary of the aftermarket floors. I emailed the guy in Canada that makes some, and they are far from a direct fit. Find a good pan at the junk yard and see about sawzalling it apart.
