Prospective owner

I've been hunting for a z car for a while now, and I believe I've come across one in good enough condition to take a look at. Also curious to know what the experts think of it. So here's what I found:

Its a 1982 280zx turbo with 128,xxx miles, new clutch, new tires, "lots of extra parts"(extra t-tops, muffler)

HVAC fan and e-brake don't work.

Needs some love, especially in the rear fenders, drivers seat, headliner, missing trim on the passenger side t-top?

Listed at $4500, haven't talked price yet with the seller.

Welcome to ZDriver!

$4500 is WAY too high for a 280ZXT that still needs a lot of work (unless you live in north Canada where there are only 10 280ZX's total ).

Time to haggle.

They want WHAT now?

Offer $1,200. That'll probably be the cold shower to their gonads.

Along with the other stuff, it doesn't even have an antenna...

What car doesn't have an antenna?!

Also, does it have a tag? Green title? If it does, then $1,200 is the right price.

Lol true that. But I definately wouldn't pay half that for that car although it would be nice to have an 11th 280ZXT up here.....

Waaay Too High

Having just sold my '80 ZX, I can definitely say they're asking way too much. You can get one on Ebay that is actually not all dinged up with good interior and low mileage for around $2K. The really good "drive it home" ones are going for $4-$6K...and those aren't projects! Get one of those for $2 and put your other $2.5 into fixing it up like you want it! My one-owner ZX in almost perfect shape, 77K original miles, title, etc. went for $5300. People are asking $8-$10K, but those aren't being sold...when they drop down in the $5600 range, they sell. That sets you up for getting a really nice project car for $1 to $2K! Good luck!

Added later: There's a '83 Turbo is stellar condition for sale right now on Ebay for $4800. That's what I'm talking about!

Sorry to be off topic. But where could I get that done to my tail lights? I am just leery about trying to do it myself. It would really help with my whole Decepticon theme I am going for.

Oh, and I am asking anybody that would know. I am not asking you individually.

Look up a product called plastidip, typically bought at your near HomeDepot or you can grab fancier plastidip at dipyourcar.com

What I did:
Grab a can of black, mask off around your tails, you don't have to worry about overspray too much as plastidip when dried, can be peeled off...
Anyway, if your new at painting this could bea good practice for you. Spray a light coat, don't let it run, and DO NOT COLOR IT WITH THE FIRST COAT, should be about 10% transparency, first coat id just for making it stick. Then use a few more coats to your darkness, not too dark mind you.
The good bit is that if you goof it or decide you don't like it, it comes of with Zero damage to the surface, just rub and peel it off. It gives a matte finish so ether grab a can of plastidip clearcoat(supposedly works like clearcoat but peels like plastidip) or a can of regular clearcoat...
Here's a pix of my jeep, done in a walmart parking lot, zero prep or masking (this is why you should) probablyc could have done better but this was my first time

VHT Nite Shades. It's a translucent black that will let the light shine through and you can have whatever shade you want simply by applying more coats. The key to having it turn out right is first making sure it's as clean as possible - wipe it down with methanol which shouldn't attack the plastic. Soapy water first to get rid of most of the grime - Dawn is a great cleaner. Make sure when you spray it you put on a very light first few coats. It's really thin and it will run very easily. The first couple of coats will look like spots are missing but it will turn out much better if you go thin.

Thanks for the info!

Seller on the one I was looking at is getting really sketchy about telling me the VIN for a history check, seems like a red flag for me, don't think I'm gonna bother with that car any further.

But I did find another, a '74 2+2 260 that is in far better condition than the other.
