To reiterate from another thread: https://www.zdriver.com/forums/showt...highlight=sohc

The biggest issue w/ getting to 600hp is the cylinder head. It's a 38+ year old design. SOHC, 12 valves, intake & exhaust on the same side... it's just not an efficient head to flow a high hp application. There is a SUPER RARE DOHC head for the L-Series motor... which no one will likely ever get their hands on. The other option would be to cut some KA? heads and mount them on the block (someone did this on Hybridz)... which takes A LOT of time, knowledge, and money.

This is why I said 600hp isn't realistic. It's doable, but the hoops you'd have to jump through to make it worth while requires too much work and money (in my book).

you ever see that KA DOHC setup? its like clamped together haha. he realyl shoulda produced them, and the RARE DOHC your thinking of was made by i think os giken and only sold in japan, you find one, and got 7K to spend then do it!. but yeah he should produce that DOHC KA setup, im sure it only cost him about around 1k to do (biggest problem would probably be the custom cam) and then just sell them for a grand over production cost, he would probably make ALOT of money cause im sure everyone and their mother would want one.

DOHC L-series motors show up on yahoo auctions japan occasionally, as well as the cars they came from. people seem to forget just how common some of these "ultra-rare" parts are in japan.

Ah yes... Racetep has very sexy setups. Also Rebello (where all your hard earned $$$ goes bye-bye very fast).

engine swap it!

RB26DETT

or

VQ35DE TT with only 18psi. You'll want to do some internal mods though.

VQ puts down 400whp at only 9spi but that's due to high compression.

I would love to see another high-HP L-series build, but...

Even if you have a 400 HP engine, how are you going to put the power to the ground? Even the stock Borg-Warner T5 will reliably hold only about 350 HP max.

My friend John Kurzals has 426 HP to the wheels on his 3.1? liter L28ET and he's using straight cut gears (I think it is a world class). Jeffp is using a Tremec or T56 or something like that, but those are huge and weigh a hell of a lot.

Also, you need a really strong clutch to hold it. Even a centerforce dual friction will only hold up to about 350 HP.

I would spend a lot of time porting the head, unshrouding the valves, 4/5 angle valve job, etc. since the head flow is a huge bottleneck...I'm shooting for a reliable 350-375 HP so I don't have to spend another $2k on a transmission upgrade.

well put your new $4000 paint job on first, $1800 for Wilwood brake upgrade, and new struts springs and wheels. That should be no big deal for you since you're rich.
An L-series build of this sort will cost four times what an engine swap would.

Not rich at all. I dont plan to do this over night you know. I'm actually selling a car of mine to help kick this off.

Its going to take a long time and It just feels like something fun to try. If I wanted cheap kicks Id get a different engine but I want an L-series engine.

See Im crazy lol

T5 Bellhousing and GForce Gear set and case...I think that's what Kurzal is using.

So you seriously spent ~$2k on a transmission in a car in that shape, with stock HP??

What does your car's transmission sound like this when you're driving around?

[Edit: Check out how loud these straight cut gears are: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fgy9vc4rf90 ]

Its fun to speculate and learn about engines but maybe you should put your goals into perspective.
