Ok I'm probably Crazy but...

I got myself hooked on Wangan Midnight and Im starting to think,

How can I make a 600HP L28? All I know from the show is that its a triple blow through twin turbo with the 3.0 bore over

What else would be needed for that to make it semi-reliable? Like at lest last 50-80K miles. 100K + Is more then likely dreaming huh?

Unfortunately 600hp isn't very realistic. Anything is possible w/ enough money... but Jeff P's 450hp is about max'd out: http://www.angelfire.com/extreme/280zxt/

I'm sure he's got over $50k in the motor.

If you're dying for 600hp get yourself a Corvette C6 ZR1 supercharged LS9.

Ok What Would I be looking at parts wise that wouldnt make it very realistic? Im sure after a while it would become the block

Yes Im crazy and I wouldn't mind Trying lol But if i have too...I'll go with less... lol

dude.... LWW posted a link before to a 600WHP s30 before, it was using a GT42 turbo at about 28 psi or something with i think SDS and ITB's and an N42 head. it wasn't THAT crazy of a build as far as i could tell.

however using triple weber blow through and twin turbo's is all show, its no going to make that much HP, even though the manga would lead you to believe otherwise.

to give a vague answer to the question, i'll say that i know you'll need aftermarket forged pistons and some good aftermarket con-rods. a good head gasket, an aftermarket cam, and a good balance on all parts would be a MINIMUM for engine internals. outside, you'd need a good turbo (i have no idea which one to point you to), good exhaust, a super nice intercooler, and some other things. it would be a good idea IMO to go with megasquirt or a better system. a lightweight flywheel and performance clutch for sure. that pretty much gives a brief description of what your ENGINE alone will need. then you can work on building the rest of the car to handle it.

have a triple webber blow through setup (40mm) that will help you on your way can easily be converted to efi. just a thought

I didnt say I was going carb lol EFI for sure and I was thinking of megasqurit for sure. I figured the internals would need to be fully Balanced, idk about a light flywheel but that would help a bit, under drive pullys with no AC system. The suspension would need a defenant upgrade that for sure. And the body, I'm really good with metal SO I think I can get it to hold up.

Can you actually bore the engine that big while still being a strong block? Or would it really have to be a stroker engine?

people go to a 3.0 i think even a 3.1 on a stock stroke. its a large overbore thats for sure.... i wouldnt boost anything over a 3.0 bore size

So probably just safer to do a stroker motor then for reliability huh?

but your goal is 600? you're looking to build one of the very strongest l28's ever and you want to just stroke it? why not just shoot for a more realistic turbo goal of 400 instead.

as for the flywheel, when you're trying to build one of the best of an engine out there, you don't skimp on the flywheel.

Who said just stroke? I'm more then likely going to need the block to hold up really well arnt I? If I make it too weak It my fail early with 600 HP.

And your right of the flywheel But I didnt say Im going to use a stock one.

Twin turbos will more then likely be needed huh?

oh i see what you mean. stroke it instead of bore it. got ya. i haven't heard of many twin turbos on l28's.

Just for the record. I've read about turbo'ed 3.2's but crazy stuff there.

stroker is a waste of time and money if your going turbo. don't do it. don't even go large overbore, try to stay as close as possible to the stock bore, will yield better top end performance and less centrifugal force since the stroke isn't elongating.

For the first time in my life i think i can agree with snw, stroking a turbo motor isnt going to do much for you in the long run.

Holy cripes... I like that car I'm still gonna try for 600HP tho

Question. Why is turboing a stroker motor and bad thing?

it puts a lot of stress on it. you have an engine that already has high compression and you pump even more into it. that's why turbo versions of N/A cars come with dished pistons to reduce the compression.

Then think about the fact its going to have 600 HP anyways, thats going to be a ton of stress to start with on that engine.

Next paycheck Im headed out to find another L28 engine and start work on it Im hoping I can find a late model car, stronger block. I'll more then likely pick up a few books on the L Engines as well.

This engine wont be built over night, heck I might spend months finding out all I need to know about everything I have to know to build this right and build it reliably.

...This is gonna take a lot of time and money just to build the engine... but it will be SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO worth it

you got an 83 car, that block is the strongest that came in any L6 motor. 82/83 = strongest blocks. so your alllll goood. and just cause its a stroker will doesn't mean the compression is going to be high, the problem with it is theres more travel in the pistons now so its centrifugal strain is increased also theres a HUGE over bore involved weakening the cylinder walls and the money needed to finish it is monstrous. the 5k needed to make a proper stroker motor can be spent on a full turbo setup (a big one to) and still have money left over for a standalone engine management system....

In making a 3.1? the bore over anyways, Ok. hmm... So your pretty much saying keep the stock 2.8L? Then just modify air flow and turbo/EFI stuff right? That seems WAY to easy

if there is more travel in the pistons, how is there not more compression? it's more air being compressed to the same size combustion chamber as in a not stroked motor, right?

By stroking (and using the 240z rods) you are lowering the bottom stop of the piston, so you get more displacement w/o having the piston pop out the top of the block.

http://www2.zhome.com:81/rnt/L28conversion/3031FAQ.html

The problem is that now since you have

increased the stroke by 4mm, a 280Z piston when installed on a 280Z

rod would extend over the top of the block by 2mm! Now I have heard

of people milling the tops of the L28 pistons by 2mm to correct

this, but Ron Johnson of Nissan Motorsports said that if you mill

the stock cast pistons this much the top compression ring could get

too hot and eventually fail.

To resolve this dilemma you must use a rod and piston combination

that will allow the piston to protrude the correct amount or just

slightly more so that the pistons can be safely milled. There are

also head gaskets with different thickness available to assist in

this. You also must maintain some amount of piston to head

clearance at TDC.

Another item which must be addressed is the compression ratio. Even

if you obtained the same "deck height" as a stock 280 set up, the

compression would increase because you have increased the sweep

volume of the engine.
