New to Z's, charging problem

So I just got my first Z. 1979 280ZX coupe.

I've got charging issues, which seems rather common, but this one is weird and I haven't seen elsewhere while searching the net.

The charging system actually overloads the accessories to where it pops fuses. Sometimes as high as 18v.

However, it doesn't charge the battery at all.

Is this something that has been addressed & has a fix? Or is this a compound issue that I probably need to dig in to on an off day? I just didn't want to spend all that time if there was an answer already.

Thanks.

Welcome to ZDriver!

Replace alternator.

Actually, drive to local parts store, have them test alternator, get results stating bad alternator, then buy and replace alternator.
Actually #2... just upgrade to the GM 1-wire and drive happy.

That was my intended first step, after taking a multimeter and checking everything first.

But since I finally got to check it all in the day time, I have a pigtail style plug with a single yellow (or white, it may be yellowed from age) wire coming out of it, but the wire has been cut. This may be my problem. But I can't find any info in the FSM telling me what this specific wire is.
