Alright, so we have some AFM anamolies... Could it be? Another rare part? Missing idle adjuster, missing....sensor.... Take a gander and tell me if this is normal or should I be worried...








Yeah, I sorta cleaned it, but then I thought, "well maybe I'll have to buy a new one, considering it looks different from 100% of all of the other AFMs I've seen on this site." and stopped cleaning it.

 

Inside hole is the spot for the air temp sensor. Most AFM's have it, some don't. Some also don't have idle screws... that's just how it is.

 

Nothing major then, and thus, not the source (or future cause) of the woes of our 280?

 

is it just me... or does that AFM look really big... like a turbo AFM size... but its not cause it has the 5 prongs.... but still... it looks really big....

got the valve cover off now, we're getting the timing down before we have a barbeque and bonfire. Dang, 1 cam of pure fury!

 

why do you have the valve cover off? do you have a haynes manual or the how to rebuild your datsun OHC motor? you really shouldnt **** around with the timing chain without absolutley knowing for damn sure no doubt about it you know what your doing.

well shucks guys, no more idle problem, no more RPM surge, but there's just a hint of hesitation (throttle lag) my dad doesn't think is normal, any ideas for this one? As far as I'm concerned it feels fine, but he's the guy that knows so whatever.

 

Did he check the flux capacitor?

Now that the major probs are fixed, tune the AFM.

 

The AFM is good, as long as whoever told me it was normal for some models to be missing a sensor and idle screw was correct. The carbon track was still cherry and contacting, the flapper's motion is smooth and easy, and now it's clean, the harness port was almost flawless, you can't see it too well in the pics, but I was surprised.

What about the hesitation? He insists it shouldn't be like that at all.

 

The word "tuning" literally means "tuning." You TUNE the AFM to run BETTER than stock. The carbon track is not the only adjustment. You should read the entire page about tuning the AFM.

Hesitation could be one or more of many things... TIMING (which you have or haven't set yet???), plugs, wires, cap, rotor, old gas, placebo effect, etc. Your dad, as an ASE tech should know these things...

 

my haynes manual is from 1987 with revisions in the back, aparently its not the final revision. it came with the car along with the factoyr service manual and some other manual (shiltons mabe) either way haynes is the only one i can find at the moment.

ANYWAY....back on track.

does the hesatation go away when the car warms up?
